Jericho remembering how to slow his trot 😌
Such a good boy even though his part-time satanic friend was being ridden around him 🫣🤣
This sweet boy would make the ultimate hacking/endurance mount!

Right, good weather means we get back into it! First up we have ⬇️⬇️

Jericho
2015 Bay gelding, approx 15.3, trotter.
📍 Waipu, Northland
💲Low Green range.

Jericho has come back to find a new home, no fault of his own - his human has decided to take a break from horses.
When he was here last year we did a few farm hacks and a bunch of wee rides in the paddock. Never put a foot wrong and was always fairly brave with new things.
With his current owner he has done more farm hacking and a bunch of play in the paddock.
Although he is sensible, I wouldn’t want to put him into a high stress situation like competing as he does have a high sensitivity. In saying that, once he trusts you he’ll do as you ask.
He will require someone confident and kind - not for beginners or nervous riders.
Great to handle in every way, farrier, worming, dentist etc
Loads and travels well on a straight load.
If you want a loving best friend who will go anywhere with you Jericho is your dude!

Can possibly help with transport as far south as Hamilton.

Coming up to be listed:
Cooper - 5yo gelding trotter approx 16hh
Dude - 6yo gelding trotter approx 16.3hh
Oliver - 5yo gelding trotter approx 15.3hh
Cruz - 4yo mare pacer approx 16hh

How rehoming race horses works.

Each year Rehomers are given a number of horses that can be split into three groups. The first group are the horses that are the averages, theses horses might be plain looking, they have an average personality and ability. They will require body work, feed for their stay, worming, farrier and all the daily care plus riding. These horses don’t attract the masses of interest that above average horses or exceptional horses do. Their stay tends to be longer and Rehomers really have to push their sales, they require extra work to get a sale. They are maximum input for little output and almost always cost extra from the Rehomers own pocket.

Next are the above average horses. These horses have good conformation, maybe a nice head with some white (star, blaze) and a sock but lack the x-factor. They can be competitive horses but with allot of hard work from a very good rider. They still need body work, worming, farrier, feeding for their stay and daily care. Normally a home with arrive for this horse within a months time. These horses, Rehomers hopefully break even to pay their expenses.

Next are the exceptional horses, the moment Rehomers post a picture They are slammed with people interested before it’s even been ridden . These horses have it all and they are rare! Unfortunately these are the horses that pay for the below average horses and sometimes the above average horses to come through for rehoming, they pay for the short fall so Rehomers can still afford to live. The trouble with this horse is that people want them for nothing, the better riders want them that can do all the work themselves but that doesn’t help the below average horses.

On top of doing all the Rehomers do with the horses it’s about 20 hours a week in admin work, editing pics and videos then posting, answering messages inquiring about horses 80 percent of which have no intention to purchase. Please respect Rehomers evenings with family or time to themselves If they don’t respond and please respect if they say an exceptional horse isn’t for sale until Rehomers feel they can ask a higher (fair) price. These horses keep the wheel turning for the average horses to be rehomed.

This work is so emotionally taxing, Rehomers don’t get the excitement of race day or seeing these horse at their best. We see them generally at the end of their career, their bodies/minds showing the wear of everything they have given their owners on the track. Some have been pushed well beyond their physical capabilities and they need time. These horses need love and understanding. sadly there is a 4th group, the group no-one likes to talk about......the un-helpables. These horse are too far gone and there just aren’t enough homes to help these horses .They can be shut down or may have become agressive and defensive of their space. These are the horse that grew tired of whispering their heart ache and now they are shouting “I have had enough”. These are the horses that emotionally kill Rehomers.

Please understand that Rehomers most likely started this work with a naïveté to how taxing this work would be on their personal life, it’s intrusive. It puts so much pressure on your time with loved ones. And many will have been doing this for years, the unsung hero’s of the racing industry now doing it out of obligation to the horses because who will pick up the job when they retire? What will happen to the horses, it’s this guilt that keeps these amazing people doing the hard work.

So the next time you feel
Like a rehomer has treated you unfairly, ask yourself would you take this job on? And by all means take it on, give it a go! I dare you to give it a go.

Dedicated to all my wonderful friends doing this incredible work, I wrote this piece 5 years ago when this was my life…..it still applies.

RYAN STILL AVAILABLE

Well crikey. I’ve had a very busy few months - hence the lack of posting.
End of January I was enlisted in a rescue mission for a wee family of older Standardbreds who were skin and bone, living in a dirt paddock.
I won’t post their photos, they’re hard to look at. They have made improvement already with the help of their breeder, YourVet Waipu, Stephen Clarke Dentistry and the Life After Racing team at HRNZ - thank you all so much for your help and support.

In light of this - I’m open to taking offers on Ellie and Maple. I also have a couple that haven’t been backed and are just waiting to gain some weight if anyone is interested in a very cheap project. Range of ages and sizes. Info in pic captions.

A great, big thank you to Stephen John Clark for getting all the ponies up to date with their teeth over the last couple weeks.

7yo mare approx 14.3hh

Maple attended the Pakotai Parakao Horse Trek this weekend just gone and what an epic time we had!
Day one I had her in the middle/towards the back. She was unsettled and spicy to begin with but she settled nicely after the lunch break. She’s didn’t show any dirt, just impatience.
Day two she was much calmer and happier in the front part of the group.
During the rides we had water crossings, logs to walk over and a couple that little Maple had to jump! She’s got a fun jump so I will see what she’s like in an arena. We had steep uphills and downhills. Cows and sheep running through the paddocks we were riding in. Other spicy horses. A drone flying around filming the trek for Seven Sharp (Maple is famous - we are in the first shot that’s shown 🫣)
She took all of it in her stride and handled everything superbly - although standing around waiting is apparently for peasants.
In the last two clips you can see she had a red band in her tail, this was just a pre caution and she was very respectful of everyone apart from lifting her leg at her buddy cause he wouldnt stop nibbling and rubbing on her 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣
All in all I couldn’t be happier with how she went!

Bonnie approx 15.3 11yo trotting mare

Bonnie had her first outing at the farm. From being a nervous wreck with her first ride to this less than a week later 👌🏼
She trots nicely and has offered a very cute canter briefly.
Super friendly and easy to handle but she will need a confident rider with a firm hand to help her through the scary stuff.
Up to date on feet and worming - teeth will be done as soon as my dentist is back in the area.

Another reluctant sale - this is Joey, my best friends tb gelding.
He's 10yo approx 16hh
By Rip Van Winkle out of an O'Reilly mare.
He started his retraining with Hunter Road Stables in Hawera where they took him out competing (and excelled) before my friend buying him.
He has been with my best friend for almost 4 years now - in that time they have mostly done hacking with a sprinkle of arena work/jumping.
Joey is a very affectionate and easy lad.
He does need a confident and capable rider as he can be quite fresh when he hasn't been in work - typical tb moments.
He is only available due to friend not having enough time to be kept in work.
He would love a home where he can get shown off in the ring again - but equally happy in a home going hacking and non-competitive stuff.
Up to date on farrier, teeth and worming.

Videos available on request.

Here is a link to his album of his time with Hunter Road Stables.
