Auckland Cavy Care Guinea pig focused rescue based in Auckland, New Zealand. Chairty # CC55874 Auckland Cavy Care is a rescue not a pet shop or breeder.

Every guinea pig that comes here is technically homeless hence why we use the term 'adopt' not 'buy' as we do not breed nor do we sell guinea pigs for profit. We're a 'half-way-home' while the piggies are looking for their forever home. Their first three weeks with us are spent in quarantine, and if needed they get vet treatment. Once they're out of quarantine they get put up for adoption to a loving permanent home where they will be valued and nurtured as part of the family.

We are blown away by The Bunny Bach's generosity in providing hay donations to our rescue and others! šŸ°šŸ’š

Today's massive donation pickup of almost 400kg is incredible!
With hay being almost 90% of a guinea's diet and having over 80 guineas in the rescue, we're so grateful for their on-going support with hay.

Today, we say thank you and how much we appreciate the work vet Roz Holland had done for all rescues but especially our Guinea pig rescue.

We met Roz many years ago but in the bad old days of when we were helping with battery hen rescues. The pictures imprinted in my mind and the smells of the sheds, memories we will never forget. Thank goodness those tiny cages are gone for hens. We know there is still more to do for the welfare of hens in New Zealand, but getting rid of those cages was a step forward. Roz was at every recuse tending to all the unwell hens one at time, with care and compassion. We then ran into Roz again at The Animal Sanctuary working bees, learning from her wisdom.

While she was at the SPCA, she always supported our young rescue in the ways she could with advice and practical support for which we will be forever grateful for.

In the past 8 years, Roz has dedicated her time and energy to helping countless other rescues across Aotearoa through Animal Advocate Collective Impact NZ (AACINZ). She worked to fundraise and then would gift donations to animal charities across New Zealand, for which we were thankful to be a recipient.

Now is a time for Roz to step back and focus on other things. There are 7 more weeks of donations to be gifted, and if you vote for us, we might be lucky enough to get in the top 7 and get a final gift from this amazing charity.

So, if you have looked at our posts about double donations until the end of July and thought I wish I could help but are just am not in a position to gift money right now, you can help by simply voting for Auckland Cavy Care and share with friends to vote for us and of course anyone else they wish to.

SORTED THANK YOU!

🚨Is there someone in our community who can lend a hand with moving 2 cages and a hutch tomorrow? They must be moved tomorrow. 🚨

The items are located in Birkenhead Point and need to be transported to Beachhaven and Glen Eden, so likely in two trips.

The dimensions are as follows: the hutch is 95cm wide x 80cm high x about 2m long, and the cages are 1.3m high x 1.2m wide.

We appreciate any help with lifting and moving these heavy items.

Please message the rescues page if you can help.

As we get closer to the end of our chance to double donations we are looking at all sorts of ways to get to the 10k max out.

The week we were donated a lovely indoor hutch to put up on trademe and the funds earned will nudge a little bit closer.

https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketplace/pets-animals/rabbits-guinea-pigs/cages/listing/5412822194?bof=55Xue4Do

It is homemade, and is 164cm x 95cm, so at 1.5 sq. meters it is a fantastic size for up to 4 guinea pigs.

Winner is welcome to also take the left-over hay, pellets and other bits from when the cage was set up - all still in good condition.
Pick up from Mellons Bay.

Thank you to everyone so far, we wouldn’t be here without you.

Together we can do more.

"Relocating overseas – Loving Homes Needed for 4 Beautiful Cats

Humans are relocating overseas, and sadly, they need to rehome their four beloved cats: Luna, Izzy, Shadow, and Lulu. This has not been an easy decision, but for the cats wellbeing, they feel it’s best to find them loving homes here in Aotearoa. Each of these girls has their own unique personality, and they want to make sure they go to the best possible homes.

Meet the girls:

Luna – 3 years old
Hi, I’m Luna! I’m full of love and adore chilling out with my human. I get along well with dogs and other cats. I’d really love to find a home with my sister and best friend, Izzy—we’ve grown up together and it would make this big change a lot less scary if we could stay together. I’m the queen of finding sunny spots to sprawl out and soak up the rays.

Izzy – 3 years old
Hi, I’m Izzy! I’m Luna’s sister and a total snuggle bug. Most mornings, my mum wakes up to find me curled up on her pillow. I love cuddles, pats, and living my best life. Just like Luna, I’d love for us to stay together in our new home—we’re a perfect pair! I get on well with dogs too.

Shadow – 7 years old
Hey, I’m Shadow. I’m a bit older and very chilled—I love sleeping and cuddling with my humans. I’m also the only one smart enough to use the cat door! I like to take myself outside during the day to hang out on the shed roof or in my favourite shed spot, then come in at night for dinner and snuggles on the bed. I get on well with dogs.

Lulu – 5 years old
Hi, I’m Lulu! I’m super friendly, cuddly, and sometimes a little mischievous. I enjoy chilling out during the day and getting pats from my humans. At night, I sleep in the special bed my mum made me—and she said I can take it with me to my new home, which I’m pretty stoked about! I’m all good with dogs too.

If you think you could give one (or more) of their girls a loving forever home, please call/text 027 276 4397.
Please Note: They are based in Tokoroa but can deliver the girls to the right forever home to as far as Mangawhai up North and within a 3 hour driving radius from Tokoroa. "

27 days left to reach our goal of $10,000 to get the most out of our donation match campaign! We have just over $1,300 to try to raise.

Pictured is Hugo, the father from our post here - https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1Af19uQYjx/

What we've been up to recently:

4 guinea pigs and 1 rabbit surrendered by a pest control company after they were contacted to trap 10 or so "rabbits". They caught 6 guinea pigs and 1 rabbit, unfortunately they then gave 2 of the guinea pigs (1 male and 1 female) to someone before contacting us but the new people know we are happy to help and have our contact if they choose to stop the guineas breeding.

In the two weeks alone;

- We've had 5 guinea pigs surrendered (and the one bun, but please note we are NOT taking rabbits anymore, but she came with the guineas from the pest control company).
- 7 guinea pigs adopted to their new homes.
- 2 guinea pigs out to a month adoption trial home
- Clara the new rabbit de-sexed, microchipped and vaccination booked for Monday.
- Three of the cats in the rescue have had their vaccinations and the 11-year-old had her bloods done; amazingly she's found a home she will go to today (so 1 cat adopted!)
- 4 male guinea pigs de-sexed and microchipped
- 3 female guinea pigs de-sexed and microchipped.

We may not post every day what happens in the rescue, but there for sure always is something happening in the rescue!

One month to go!

As most of you know we have a generous supporter who has offered to donation match donations up to $10,000 until the end of July 2025. You all have managed to raise $8433.12 so far which is just amazing!

To get the full amount of this opportunity we still have a bit to go - so please share far and wide to any and all to help us reach this goal!

Today's post video is just a very quick update on Sparrow - you can see he is doing SO well, eating all by himself now, walking normally and interacting with his current buddies. You can also see how many poohs are in each cage, less than 24 hrs worth of piggie poohs - I decided not to sweep up before videoing as let's face it - poohs are a bit part of the guinea life!

We have a few guineas needing foster homes, so please do get in touch if you can offer a couple guineas a loving foster home - we supply the complete indoor 2x4 c&c cage set up (around 70cm x 140cm) as well as the hay and pellets.

For more info on fostering head over to our website and have a read - https://www.aucklandcavycare.org.nz/fostering/. Then when you're ready fill out our foster application form to start the process of becoming a foster home!

šŸ¹šŸ’” From Streets to Safety: The Journey of Our Rescued Guinea Pigs šŸ’”šŸ¹

Our rescue is home to guinea pigs from all walks of life—and sadly, many of those walks begin in heartbreak.

✨ 20% come from the streets, abandoned and alone.
šŸ  Others are left behind in rentals when tenants move on.
āœˆļø Some are surrendered by families moving overseas or when the novelty wears off.
šŸ’” Many are victims of relationship breakups.
šŸ“ž We get calls from councils, vets, pet shops, and the public—each one a plea for help.

One of the most heartbreaking trends? Families trying to show their kids ā€œthe circle of life.ā€ They start with two guinea pigs… and by the time they reach out, we’re rescuing herds of 6 to 28—with pregnant females included. Our largest intake? 28 guinea pigs on day one… which became 45 after all the babies were born.

These animals deserve better. They deserve love, care, and a safe place to call home. šŸ’•

We love when potential adopters opt to foster trial before committing to adopting as it means they aren't jumping in the deep end buying everything straight away to only find out guineas don't actually fit into their household.

After just over 2 years in the rescue, Squish and Bo finally have found their forever home via a foster trial to adopt!

Here is what their new family has to say about the process.

"Our daughter came across the Auckland Cavy Care website and after researching, decided she wanted guinea pigs Initially we weren't sure, but all the information was there, and after visiting and asking lots of questions, we decided to foster two guinea pigs and see how it went for a month. We were so impressed, and they even let us borrow everything needed to get us started.

Our guineas, Squish and Bo are two lovely boy guineas. They are very social and friendly, and now we have decided to adopt them and give them a forever home. The foster and adoption process has been easy, and Hartley and Raylene have been very helpful answering all our many questions."

With more and more foster to adopt homes, we are needing to update our stock supply to send to all these foster homes! Please check out our donation wish list at Pet.kiwi as many of the items on there are ones we send to foster homes in the set up. Main things are 3kg burgess, large wooden tunnel and igloos.

Day 35 of our donation match fundraiser and we are almost at 7.5k - again wow thank you all!

Late last week we took in 5 guinea pigs who had been living in a tiny hutch (just 45cm x 92cm so 0.4 meters squared, not even half the recommended size for 2 guineas).

Unfortunately, both mum and the female from the 1st litter are at risk of being pregnant, we were told the youngest babies were around 3 weeks old, so we have our fingers crossed the baby girl is not pregnant.

All 5 need names - please comment your suggestions!

We would not have been able to offer these 5 a spot in the rescue if we did not have the funds to support their care while with us - so thank you all so much!
We really do rely on all our supporters, volunteers and foster homes.

An update on Sparrow - He had a vet check up yesterday and he has gained 100g in the few days with us and we've been able to stop on the sub cut fluids and lessen the critical care syringe feeds.
He LOVES his critical care feeds, getting food in his belly must feel so good for him!

His back legs still splay a little, but hopefully once he gains muscles and keeps having good nutrition, they may become more normal.
He is enjoying time with the baby boys, and hopefully they are encouraging him to eat more. Having a buddy or more for guineas is important to their mental health, gives them so much.

We're now just over 7k in our donation match fundraiser, again just amazing! A reminder that every dollar will be matched by a generous supporter up to 10K!
No donation is too small, the price of a cup of coffee or tea, $5 will make a difference as it will become $10.

Our Story

Auckland Cavy Care is a rescue, we are not a pet shop or breeder. Each Guinea Pig that comes into the rescue is at that point homeless as due to no fault of their own they are needing a home, this can be due to many reasons. We are a ā€œhalf-way-homeā€ for the Guinea Pigs while they are looking for their forever home, and we could not run the the rescue with-out the support of our foster home network who offers up their time and space to lovingly foster the Guinea Pigs.

Each Guinea Pig is de-sexed and vet checked prior to adoption, this is because we firmly believe in de-sexing Guinea Pigs both for their health but also to stop any unwanted breeding. This does mean that our adoption fees are higher, however this does not cover the expenses that the rescue incurs and no profit is made from the adoption of each Guinea Pig, we run at a loss as we do this for the love of the Guinea Pigs and the hope to make a better future for each one that comes our way.
