🌸 SPRING LITTLERIVER CHALLENGE CAMP ANNOUNCEMENT! 🌸
9am September 29th – 5pm October 1st | $360

Our camp this coming spring holidays is a challenge camp!
Over the 3 days, riders will team up to take on a variety of challenges, earning 'camp cash' along the way — which they'll need for a fun finale on the last day.

We have been running camps here at Littleriver for 10 years, giving riders an unforgettable experience where they can develop their riding, learn new horsemanship skills, make new friends and have a ton of fun in a positive environment.

Riders need to be capable of independent walk and trot minimum. Our camps are tailored to our attendees. Whether that's a rider who's just started cantering or a rider competitively jumping 80cm courses.
Ages 8+

Staying over night is not mandatory if you would rather go home for the nights.
We have an awesome team of school ponies we use for camp or you can bring your own horse/pony.

Bookings require a non-refundable $100 deposit (leaving you 310 to pay before the camp date).

Limited spots. Mssg to book.

✨ Star Pony of the Month ✨

Summer is a 27yr old 13hh Kaimanawa x Welsh.
This week we say goodbye (and a huge thank you) to Summer as she heads into a well-earned retirement back home with her owners.

We've had Summer on lease from her wonderful owners for the last 3 years. She has been a huge part of our program and is one of the sweetest ponies in the world. Always patient, always kind and always happy to be fussed over, she's a firm favorite of many of our riders.
In her life she's done it all, from jumping to pony club to endurance. She had a few lease homes before us, however none of them stuck as Summer kept jumping out of the paddocks!
Fortunately for us that wasn't the case here, although she will escape from a yard if you don't put extra lead ropes across the gateway!

As she’s getting older, she is ready to enjoy a quieter pace of life. We’ll miss her dearly, but we’re so grateful for everything she’s given us.

Shorter Sessions, Better Results?

More isn’t always better, for you or your horse.
A focused 25 ride that includes clear transitions, straightness and a balanced position can do more than an hour of aimless circles.

Long, unfocused rides can lead to fatigue, tension, and confusion in both horse and rider.
Remember to end on a good note, before either of you are mentally or physically drained. That’s when the real learning sticks.

It's never the horse's fault! Until...

• My horse is just lazy for no reason
• My horse is stubborn and sour
• My horse "throws temper tantrums" for no good reason

We see this all the time - lessons and mantras of trainers and horse owners claiming that nothing is ever the horses fault while at the same anthropomorphizing to their horse's detriment. The horse that has ulcers and is worried about a lack of forage becomes "a sour brat", the horse that starts to bulldoze because they're confused and getting nervous is called a "turd" for not listening, and the horse that has been put above threshold is "overreacting" and "challenging authority."

This week, challenge yourself to really take notice of how you're thinking about your training and your horse's behavior. Try reframing common thoughts into new language - instead of thinking your horse is being stubborn, think about how you can change your training to overcome the issue. Instead of resorting to punishment for the behavior that hasn't gone away even after weeks of working to train it away, consider some new perspectives. If this resonates with you, follow along for more!

Yesterday was our last full day program of the Winter holidays.

Our theme for our lucky last day was training!

Did you know that any time we're around horses, we're training them? Horses are always learning and training skills are needed by every rider, big and small!

Yesterday the rider's learnt a range of important skills, from recognizing horse's body language in photos and making a collage, to how to communicate on the ground around a course, to how to use clicker training to teach a horse to target.

We also had a ridden scavenger hunt out in the paddocks and around the track before ungearing and riding them back to their paddocks on the covers.

A huge shoutout to our wonderful helpers, our amazing ponies and all the kids who attended (and their parents for bringing them)!

Our holiday program today was barn buddy themed!

We started the day feeding some of the horses before we got our ponies ready and moved into an amazing race.
Rider's worked in teams to complete different activities, from riding out in the paddock, cleaning a saddle, folding a rug, tying a quick release knot and more.
It's such a great way for the kids to learn different skills.
The afternoon was filled with painting poles, plaiting, washing Dusty and other fun barn chores.
We also had the vet in for a couple of horses today, the kids asked some great questions about what the vet was doing and learnt some new facts.
