Triplets!
We recently had a mare present to us for her 15 day pregnancy scan with a positive result x3…triplets!!
We don’t see these very often so it was pretty cool to see them all sat together in the uterus. Our vet was expecting that this could be a possibility as she had noted x3 pre-ovulatory follicles at the time of semen insemination & x3 ovulations on ultrasound exam the day after insemination.
Twins (and triplets)…are not advisable in mares because the unique nature of the placenta in horses means that the foal requires the entire surface of the placenta in order to grow and make it to term. Therefore, twin pregnancies are risky to both the mare and the foal with unwanted consequences possibly including abortion, foal death and difficulty foaling.
Therefore, by checking the mare at this stage of pregnancy, our experienced vets are able to manually terminate any extra pregnancies leaving us with just one pregnancy left 😊
