Thinking of adopting a dog? Our friends at May Hounds have this chilled boy Buster up for adoption. Check out Busters profile in the May Hounds post.

Buster would make a great companion for both humans and other dogs!

Back with Olive and her hoomans for another session. It’s great to see her progress around being calmer when dogs are in her space.

Olive has seen our Bailee before, at Distance and with Bailee being calm and quiet. Today we added movement and noise as well as getting closer, and Olive made good decisions and was able to Leave and be called away when needed.

Great work team.

Ever feel like your daily walk is less of a stroll and more of a grueling tug-of-war battle?

A tight leash usually just means your dog is completely overwhelmed by the world. It’s a constant struggle between two things:

The Environment:
Every smell, rustling leaf, and passing dog is a massive distraction they feel they *m must investigate.

The Focus:
The hard work it takes for them to stay calm and remember you are at the other end of the line.

Helping your dog win this internal struggle gets a lot easier if they've had plenty of positive socialisation from the time they were a puppy right through their adult life.

When a dog has regular, relaxed exposure to the world, they learn to take strange sights and sounds in stride rather than getting hyper-excited or worried.

But being a team doesn't mean denying or suppressing your dog's natural instinct to explore. A great walk isn't a power struggle; it's a compromise. It's about finding a rhythm where your dog gets to check out the neighborhood news, but you both move together without the constant arm-pulling battle.

Whether your goal is a perfect side-by-side heel or you're just happy as long as you aren't being dragged down the road, success is simply finding a balance that works for both sides of the leash.

Dream … well she’s just a dream 💕

I caught up with her new whānau for a virtual consult to hear how well Dream is settling into pet life. Learning to live with a dog-sister and happy to street and park walk.

Her hoomans are experienced dog owners which mean Dream has all that knowledge helping her settling in 👏🏻

Always proud of our little fur kid Bailee at the vet clinic.

This is her 3rd visit in as many weeks due to a scratch on her eyeball. All the work we've done with Bailee when it comes to co-operative care is paying off.

Happy little girl waits calmly in the consult room. Eye examine, eye drops...no problem.

Elvira, with her hooman brother, learning the Leave cue. This cue takes time, practice and patience to learn. It’s about understanding that Distance and calmness are the key factors to success.

Elvira is learning that cats and free range chickens aren’t that interesting
… and that can take months.

Great start on introducing the Leave cue and also how to start introducing it around other non-hooman whānau members.

Arlo's making great progress with his anxiety in unfamiliar spaces. Today, Arlo was out of the car with a ton of confidence wanting to explore and investigate.

Here he is back home getting lots of scratches. All I can say is "good boy and look at the size of your paws!!!!!"

SIMPLISTICALLY, a dog that is calm is a dog that can focus , hear your cue, and do it (if you’ve trained them to do it!!)

Obviously there are many instances, triggers and environments that drive a dogs behaviour. For Mac, when he’s in a public space over excitement, people, cars and smells make it hard for him to stay calm and focus.

Our training today was practicing calmness getting out of the car in an environment full of builders, utes, and school kids. It was also about Mac’s mum processing what she needed to do, what cues to use and what order to do them in.

A brilliant session, as you can see by the video. Trust me, it’s been months of hard yakka to get to this point, and that’s fine. Learning isn’t linear for both dog and human.
