🐾✨ Happy International Black Cat Day! ✨🐾

Today we’re celebrating our sleek, mysterious, and utterly magical black cat friends! 🖤🐈‍

Black cats have long been misunderstood, but the truth is: they're just as loving, playful, and full of purr-sonality as any other feline.
In fact, many cultures see them as symbols of good luck and protection!

At Companion Vets, we think every cat is special, but today we’re giving a little extra love to the black beauties who often get overlooked in shelters.

😻 Do you have a black cat? Share a photo in the comments 🖤 We’d LOVE to see your house panthers!

🥳Yes it is International Left Handers Day and Yes animals, including pets like cats and dogs, can be left-handed (or rather, left-pawed).

✍While humans exhibit a strong preference for right-handedness, with about 90% being right-handed, animals show a more even distribution of left and right-handedness. Studies have shown that a significant percentage of dogs and cats display a preference for using their left paw, though the exact percentages vary across studies.

Here's a breakdown:

🐶Dogs:
Research indicates that dogs are more likely to be left-pawed than humans are left-handed. Studies have shown that between 31% and 53% of dogs are left-pawed, according to Psychology Today.

😺Cats:
Similarly, cats also exhibit a paw preference, with studies showing 36% to 46% of cats being left-pawed.

🐾 Cranial Cruciate Ligament (CCL) Injuries in Dogs – What You Need to Know 🦴

Is your dog suddenly limping or holding up a back leg after a run at the park? One of the most common causes of hindlimb lameness in dogs is a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture—similar to an ACL injury in humans.

💡 What is the CCL?
The CCL is a key ligament in the knee that helps stabilize the joint. When it ruptures—either partially or completely—your dog may limp, struggle to bear weight, or seem painful when walking or getting up.

🔍 How is it diagnosed?
At Companion Vets, we perform a thorough orthopedic exam, often paired with X-rays and, in some cases, sedation to fully assess the joint. We check for signs like joint instability (drawer motion) and swelling in the stifle (knee) joint.

🛠️ Treatment Options
Unfortunately, the CCL doesn’t heal on its own. The good news is that surgical repair offers excellent long-term results and can restore your pet’s quality of life.

We have highly experienced surgeons at Companion Vets who offer two trusted surgical options:

➡️ Extracapsular Repair – Ideal for smaller dogs. This technique uses a strong suture placed outside the joint to stabilize the knee while the body heals.

➡️ TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) – The gold standard for medium to large or very active dogs. This advanced procedure changes the dynamics of the knee to eliminate the need for the damaged ligament.

🩺 Recovery is closely monitored, and we’ll guide you through every step.

If you suspect your dog may have a CCL injury, don’t wait. Early diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference.
