Kāpiti Cats - Found Minx 😻 Helping stray and abandoned kittens and cats in Kapiti, NZ
😺 trapping and making a plan
😽 kittens/cats avaliable for adoption We got him back!!!!!

We started this page to help find our cat Minx who was stolen and dumped far from home. Now we use this page to help cats in the Kāpiti region. We can help with scanning for microchips, trapping cats, access to subsidized desexing, advice etc. If we can help we will! We mostly focus on colonies and surrender to Levin SPCA if possible. However in peak kitten season when all the rescues and SPCA are

full we take in more kittens and cats ourselves so sometimes do adoptions. We can't bear to see cats/kittens we know we could help find homes be euthanized or left to breed in the wild! We are a registered charity: Kapiti Cats - Found Minx CC63320

We are 100% funded by donations. If you can help our account number is 38-9027- 0054392-00

This is what gratitude looks like from one grateful owner that was reunited with their cat that had gone missing after it got injured. We lent them a trap, taught them how to use it and sure enough they were reunited with their cat that is now recovering.
We use a LOT of cleaning materials to clean out our traps and cages and the washing machine can go pretty much nonstop at the height of kitten season, washing towels and bedding, keeping everything clean and sterile for our most vulnerable furry friends.

We are here to help our local community and together we can make a difference.

It's kitten season!

Mama Rosemary was living under someone's house and gradually learnt to trust this family. Much to their surprise a couple of weeks ago they found a litter of young kittens under the house. Mama Rosemary and her babies were moved inside and this little family is now thriving. The babies are continuing to gain weight and Rosemary is proving to be a beautiful mama. She has been scanned to see if she was chipped and potentially someone's long lost pet but no chip was found. We will keep this little family together for as long as possible and when the babies are old enough they will all be desexed, etc and will then be looking for their own loving homes. Rosemary will also be desexed and will then be adopted by the family she chose for herself.

We are so very grateful that the family she chose to trust reached out to us to ask for help and advice. It meant we were able to do a health check for mama and her babies, provide the necessary flea and worm treatment and offer advice and everything else needed to keep this sweet little family safe, healthy and thriving.

Got an unexpected litter of kittens? We can help!

We know that sometimes nature has other plans: surprise, your cat has a litter of kittens!

At Kapiti Cats, we’re here to help take the stress out of the situation. We can offer two options:

1️⃣ Weaned Kittens: Once the kittens are ready to leave mum, we can take them into our care, ensure they’re desexed, vaccinated and microchipped and find them loving forever homes. We’ll also organise to have mum desexed for free, so she doesn’t have to go through another pregnancy.

2️⃣ Mum & Babies together: If you’d prefer, we can take mum and her kittens into foster care and give them all the care and extra nutrition they need until the kittens are weaned. Once the little ones are old enough to be adopted, we’ll make sure mum is desexed and then happily return her to you.

Our goal is to reduce the number of unwanted litters and keep local cats safe and healthy.

If your cat has had kittens and you need support, please get in touch. We’re here to help, not to judge.

As a follow-up to yesterday's post, who remembers wee Elvis and mama Charlie from last season? Elvis was mama Charlie's third pregnancy of the season, and potentially fourth within a 12-month period. We suspect he may have had siblings that died. Him and his mama came to us when he was just 4 weeks old. And thank goodness that they did because Charlie was only a very young cat herself . Elvis needed supplemental feeding because his mama was so depleted from previous litters that she did not produce enough milk to sustain him anymore.
They were both adopted into beautiful families with Charlie finally being given the chance to be a young and carefree girl without having a family to care for.

Kitten season is once again upon us. Small rescue charities like ours with limited resources as well as the well known big ones will soon be overflowing with cats and kittens. Did you know that an undesexed female can have up to 3 litters per season? And that female kittens can get pregnant from as young as 4 months old? That means that babies born this season can have babies themselves this season! So please, do your bit and get them snipped.

Recently we were able to help out Pōneke Ngeru and agreed to take on some teenage kittens from a colony they were working with in Porirua.

After a couple of decompression days in our cat room the "R's" caught so far are now in a foster home and considering the huge changes they have experienced in a short amount of time are doing remarkably well. Rumple and Raven share their foster home with 4 other cats to learn from, a human dad and his 6 year old daughter. His daughter drew a wonderful portrait of their temporary guests which was too cute not to share.

Rumple has already found his forever home with someone who was feeding the colony and alerted the rescue and asked for help. Raven will be available for adoption once he has learned to trust the hand that feeds him and is no longer able to procreate. Being a black kitten means his adoption fee will be reduced by $100 thanks to a donation from Black Fur Studios a couple of months back specifically ear marked to reduce the adoption fee of black cats and kittens.

One rescue can make a difference. Many rescues working together? That’s how real change happens. Stronger together, for the cats who need us most. By supporting each other instead of working in isolation we create a stronger safety net for cats and for the people who care about them. Teamwork means more lives saved and a kinder community for everyone.

Our gorgeous Meme is still looking for that special home. She is utterly delightful and a real character. But, she has a heart condition (no medication required) which means she may not live to a ripe old age, or maybe she will, we just don't know. Meanwhile she doesn't have to work very hard to take up a big space in your heart because she is just so lovable.
Meme is available to meet now. Fill out the form below, put "Meme" in the comments and we will be in touch soon.

A little reminder

We love our community support but as kitten season is again upon us we just want to remind everyone of what Kapiti Cats actually does.

Our mahi is focusses on helping feral, stray and abandoned kittens and cats, socialising them, providing vet care where needed and once desexed, microchipped and vaccinated find them loving homes. We are a small volunteer run rescue charity and this takes up all of our time and limited resources. Because of that we can’t take on rehoming 𝗱𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰 cats. We know it can be really hard when circumstances change and you need to find a new home for your pet but our limited resources need to go where they make the biggest difference: for vulnerable cats and kittens and for the protection of our local wildlife.

If you’re needing to rehome a domestic cat there are other options out there; inquire with your vet clinic, ask friend/family/neighbours, post on local pet adoption pages or as a last resort contact:
The Cat's Protection League Wellington, though a waiting list applies. Website: https://www.catsprotectionwellington.org.nz
HUHA rescue animals from dangerous or harmful situations. They may be able to assist depending on circumstances. Website: https://www.huha.org.nz
SPCA provide help for sick, injured and vulnerable animals. They may be able to assist depending on circumstances. Website: https://www.spca.nz/

Thanks for understanding and for helping us stay focused on the cats who need us most.
