I am pretty sure everyone is enjoying the opportunity for an outing exploring the wider manawatu with the lovely blue sky, sunny days....

When it is not swelteringly hot.

Remember to not exercise your four legged friends during the hottest parts of the day and afternoon and provide plenty of water and shade!

I came across these berries more than once on my walks this summer and since its the season that we are taking our dogs out and the season for the toxic Karaka berries to be out- I would make a poster to help doggy owners learn, identify and keep their companions safe this summer.

I have a couple of links below from various sites for more reading and identification below.

(this Unitec link is great to seeing the berries in different stages of decomposition).

If you know of any trees in the area- please let other owners know!

The festive season often means more excitement and activity in our homes, which can sometimes lead to stressful situations for our dogs. It's important to ensure that interactions between dogs and children are safe and positive.

Here are some tips to prevent dog bites to kids:

🐾 Supervise Interactions: Always supervise interactions between dogs and children. Never leave them alone together, as even well-meaning play can quickly escalate.

🐾 Touch with Consent: Teach children to ask for permission before petting a dog and to recognize signs that a dog wants to be left alone. Dogs should be allowed to approach kids on their own terms.

🐾 No Hugs: Remind kids that while they may love hugging their furry friends, most dogs do not enjoy being hugged. Hugs can make dogs feel trapped and anxious.

🐾 Avoid High Arousal Play: Encourage calm play. High-energy activities like running and roughhousing can lead to overexcitement, increasing the risk of accidental bites.

🐾 Respect Their Space: Teach children not to grab food, toys, or other objects from a dog. Dogs can become protective over their resources, leading to defensive behavior.

🐾 Safe Zones: Provide your dog with a safe space where they can retreat when they need a break from the commotion. Ensure kids understand not to disturb the dog when they are in their safe zone.

Every dog is different, so these tips may need to be adjusted to fit your dog's specific needs and temperament. If you have concerns or need a personalized plan, don't hesitate to get in touch.

Happy Holidays from Veterinary Behaviour Services NZ!

While It’s tempting to sneak a little treat to your pet under the dinner table, be careful the food is pet safe this Christmas.🎄🐾

Make sure to keep these foods out of reach and educate family members on the dangers of feeding human foods.

It's not just food that can pose a risk! Watch out for non-edible hazards your pet may try nibble like Christmas baubles, tinsel, or fishhooks at the beach.

If your pet eats any of these foods, or something you’re not sure is safe, give your vet a call. Our emergency team are working over the break and are here to help!
