GATHERING PUPU(SEA SNAILS) & CLEANING RIMURIMU(SEAWEED)
Pic of the week - Aupouri peninsula around 1920s - 1930s. The red and green seaweed Māori had as a staple for food, and bull kelp rimurapa, with inflatable blades, is used for storage.
Karengo is the most commonly eaten seaweed, it has a distinctive fishy taste when dried. It is pulled from tidal rocks in winter and spring and usually air-dried before use. Pupu sea snails or cats eye would cling to these rocks or seaweed too - lightly boiled they are delicious.

And, if you have aunties like these wahine, then you certainly know what their looks mean 😁
