Have you ever wondered what our dog’s vision is like?? 👀
How do dogs see? The eye contains a lens that focuses the light and directs it on to a thin layer of cells at the back of the eye called the retina.
It contains rod cells that are effective in dim light situations and different types of cone cells allow bright light and colour.
Humans have all 3 types of cone cells so we can detect a rainbow of colours, whereas dogs eyes only possess 2 types of cone cells (blue and yellow/green) but do not see red colours. They also see black and white and shades of grey. This type of vision is called “dichromatic vision” meaning 2 colour vision.
Can my dog see in dim light? Yes! Our dogs have many more rod cells in their retinas which detect light very well. The pupil can dilate to a larger diameter than humans and so can allow more light in dark conditions. Dogs also have a reflective structure in their eyes called the tapetum lucidum. This enhances night vision, we often see it reflecting when a light shines in their eyes.
Is my dog’s vision like someone who is colour blind? This occurs when certain types of cells are missing from the retina, for example if red cones sells are missing, the person will not see shades of red. They can struggle to differentiate between colours so that red and green, or blue and yellow may appear the same to them.
In this way people may see the world in a similar way to dogs.
Can my dog see details? Because dogs’ eyes are positioned further apart than human eyes, they have a wider field of vision (peripheral vision) . They are not so good at judging depth as humans are, as our close-set eyes make us better at this.
Dogs are unable to focus on objects closer than 30cms from their eyes, so rely on their sense of smell to find those treats on the floor!
If you see your dog bumping into things or missing a toy that is thrown and worried that their sight may be affected, then always call your vet as there are many excellent treatments available.

Update**As per Nelson City Council update, great news, it is safe to resume using this area again. Thanks NCC!

❗️ FURTHER UPDATE: Tuesday 6 May

Statement from Hilary Aikman Director Terrestrial Biodiversity DOC.

DOC scientists used a drone as part of a trial on a small area of mudflats at Wakapuaka sandflats. They used non-toxic pellets for this research, dyed blue to make them easier to see. Once the pellets were laid out, a drone was used to photograph the area where the pellets lay, to quantify pellet detection rates.

We would like to apologise to Nelson City Council and members of the public, particularly dog owners for the concern this caused. We acknowledge the non-toxic pellets should have been removed on the day of the trial and we made an error in judgement by leaving them there. These pellets are not poisonous, and today our team is removing any pellets remaining on the ground.

❗️ UPDATE: Tuesday 6 May. This issue is now resolved. The area is safe for recreational users and dog walkers.

Meet Mint in her pretty purple noodle collar 💜.
Mint was not comfortable with a traditional plastic dog cone. Her very clever guardian has made her a custom collar with a foam pool noodle to prevent self trauma!
Mint was trying to put on a matching pair of purple shoes. You can see a sneak peak in the bottom of the pic. 👀 Good luck with your recovery gorgeous Mint!
**Note: Supervision is recommended to ensure patient is unable to remove or ingest smaller pieces of foam or plastic off any collar. Always check for a well fitted collar/device when being used to prevent self trauma
