After 24 hours of steady rain, our figgery is soaking it all in. While fig trees are known for their drought tolerance, consistent moisture, especially for young trees, is vital for healthy growth and fruit development. However, too much rain can sometimes dilute the fruit’s flavor or cause splitting, particularly in heavy soils. Fortunately, our well-draining Hawke’s Bay soil helps manage excess water, keeping our figs happy and flavorful.

If you spot syrupy liquid dripping from the fig’s ostiole, it’s a sign the fig is overripe. This happens as the sugars build up and can even lead to fermentation. Sometimes with a sweet, boozy smell and a pinkish ooze. While still beautiful in their own way, these figs are past their prime for fresh eating.

At Figs Hawks Bay, we pick our figs at just the right moment, sweet, soft, and full of flavor.

Ambre and Tess, all the way from France, have joined us this season through the WWOOF New Zealand program, lending their hands (and smiles!) to our fig harvest.

WWOOFing (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) connects volunteers with organic farms like ours, creating a wonderful exchange where travelers help with farm work in return for food, accommodation, and hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture.

We’re so grateful for their hard work in the orchard… pruning, harvesting, sorting, and learning all about our delicious organic figs. Merci, Ambre & Tess!

This striking image captures a rare moment… one of our figs in full bloom! Unlike most fruit, figs are actually inverted flower clusters (syconia), with tiny flowers hidden inside.

In New Zealand, our figs are self-fertile, producing fruit without the need for pollination by fig wasps. This means their seeds are often hollow, creating the luscious texture we love. A single fig can contain anywhere from 30 to 1,600 seeds, depending on the variety!

Nature’s design is truly fascinating, and we love sharing these little wonders with you.

A Magical Evening at Craggy Range Restaurant

What a gorgeous evening we had at Craggy Range on Tuesday sampling our very own figs, beautifully enhanced and transformed by the incredible talents of the Craggy Range chefs. Every dish was a masterpiece, with flavors that were simply sublime.

From the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warmth and care. A special thank you to the lovely Kate, who greeted us and suggested we take our first drink, a refreshing Summer Spritz (feijoa-infused vermouth with fig syrup over bubbles) on a stroll through the stunning gardens. It was the perfect start to an unforgettable dining experience.

The food, the drinks, the setting, and the wonderful staff made for a truly special evening. We absolutely loved it!
