Congratulations team, huge effort!!!

🎉 We're proud to share some exciting news! 🎉

The Wairarapa Racing Club has been named Country Club of the Year at the 2024 NZTR Club Awards! 🏆

This recognition celebrates the incredible work of racing clubs right across Aotearoa. The Country Club category included 28 clubs from across all regions of New Zealand, each playing a vital role in their local communities and the wider racing industry.

The award was presented to our President Garrick Emms at the NZ Thoroughbred Racing Industry Development Conference in Auckland on March 31st.

“This really reflects the strength of country clubs around New Zealand,” says Garrick. “We’re proud to be part of a wider community that brings people together through racing and events. A big thank you to all the staff and volunteers who make it happen at Tauherenikau.”

Longtime volunteer Ron Weitzel added:
🗣 “It’s not just about race days — it’s the people, the friendships, and the effort that goes in year-round. This recognition means a lot to all of us who care about the club and love being part of it.”

As part of the award, we’ve received a $5,000 grant from NZTR to put toward an on-course initiative or special event — and we’re looking forward to putting that to good use for our community.

đź’š A huge thanks to NZTR and to everyone who continues to support grassroots racing in Wairarapa and beyond.

Big weekend for Opaki at Champions Day

NZ’s richest sporting event will have good representation from Masterton Racing Club this Saturday with 3 runners linked to the club.

Local trainer (and Opaki caretaker) Peter Jeffcoat will saddle up Don Pedro in the $1.25 million NZ Derby. It will only be the 24th time that Peter has had a runner to the races and this horse gave him his first winner only a few weeks ago yet here he is in one of NZ’s most prestigious races. A great achievement. Don Pedro was a good winner last start at Tauherenikau over 2050m and all indications are that he will eat up the 2400m of the Derby. The in form Sam Spratt will ride and although drawn out the long run to the first bend should allow Sam to position him up where she wants to. It would be one hell of a story if this horse was to be able to win and we wish Peter and his team all the best.

Gerald and Donna Innes will be represented as owners in the Auckland Cup with Sailor Jack. Formerly trained at Opaki, top jock Mick Dee will take the ride and based on current form he should be a good each way hope in the cup.

Past president Ray Southey will also be represented as an owner in the NZ Derby with Ayteem. To be ridden by Kelly Myers, he comes to the Derby after placing 2nd last start over 2200m at Waverley.

We wish all members the best of luck this weekend.

Peter and his wife Liza have been in the game for a long time and to finally get their first win, is an absolute thrill!!

RUBY ROCKS TOO TOUGH

The ROGER ALLEN trained Ruby Rocks was too tough and strong for them in the Marton Cup today. Given a peach of a ride in front by apprentice Toni Davies, Ruby held off a line of challengers as they crossed the line. She has become something of a cups queen having previously won the Horowhenua, Wairarapa and Masterton cups. Congratulations to the Allens and the Bindy One Syndicate, we are sure you will celebrate appropriately.

Huge congratulations Dave and Deb, it doesn’t get much better than that, with the weekend you’ve just had!!

Masterton breeder-owner David Woodhouse has had a memorable couple of days on racetracks in Australia and New Zealand. His outstanding mare Belclare [pictured with David below) won a $2million race in Sydney yesterday and another pride and joy Connello won at Trentham today.
