🐰🐣 Easter Safety Tips for Animals 🐣🐰

The team at The Vet Clinic Wairarapa would like to wish you and your families a safe and happy Easter!!

As Easter approaches, excitement fills the air, but for our furry friends, this holiday season can pose several hazards. To ensure your pets have a safe and enjoyable Easter, here are some key things to be careful with:

🍫Chocolate: Toxic to dogs and cats, especially dark and baking chocolate. Keep all chocolate out of reach.

💐Easter Lilies: Highly toxic to cats. Keep them out of your home or in a secure room.

🎉Easter Grass: Can cause choking or intestinal blockages. Use pet-friendly alternatives or keep it out of reach.

🎈Small Decorations and Batteries: Choking hazards or intestinal blockages. Keep them secure.

🍇Toxic Foods: Onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and xylitol are hazardous. Keep them away from pets.

🙀Holiday Stress: Provide a quiet space and maintain routine to reduce stress.

By following these tips, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable Easter for your pets!

🚨🐾 PARVOVIRUS ALERT 🐾🚨

Our clinic along with others have seen an increase of Parvovirus (Parvo) cases in puppies. As a dog owner, it's crucial to know about this highly contagious and potentially life-threatening virus.

*What is Parvo?*
Parvo affects dogs of all ages, especially puppies under six months. It spreads through direct contact with infected dogs, contaminated environments, people, or objects.

*Symptoms:*
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Loss of appetite

*Vaccination is Key:*
Parvo vaccination is the most effective protection. Puppies need vaccinations at 6-8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks, with a 7-10 day waiting period before socialization. Adult dogs require regular booster shots.

*Protect Your Dog:*
- Vaccinate on time
- Maintain booster shots
- Practice good hygiene
- Avoid exposing your dog to potentially infected dogs
- Verify vaccination status with breeders or new owners

Stay vigilant and protect your furry friends! 🐾💕

Introducing BRAVECTO QUANTUM - The Ultimate Flea and Tick Protection for Your Furry Friend!

Say goodbye to monthly treatments and hello to a full year of uninterrupted protection against fleas and ticks! With just one simple dose from your veterinarian, Bravecto Quantum keeps your dog safe from these pesky parasites for 12 whole months! And the best part? It's suitable for dogs from just 6 months old!

Persie, the brave birthday boy who celebrated his 3rd birthday in style! He received the VERY FIRST dose of Bravecto Quantum at The Vet Clinic Wairarapa!
We affectionately call Persie a "scaredy cat," but he proved us wrong! Despite not being a fan of injections, he didn't even flinch! Maybe it was the fact his eyes were glued to the treat jar the whole time!

Celebrating successes!
Remember Rosie the pony who fell into a septic tank in November? Since her dramatic rescue, her dedictated owner (and a team of helpers) have been treating the nasty wounds on her front legs that she suffered while in the hole. We are delighted that she has now completely recovered. A long haul, and a real team effort!

Beautiful Gwen the Valais Black Nose had a complete hamstring injury during shearing and couldn't put any weight on that leg. Many sheep would have been put down, but due to her value as a breeding ewe her owner was happy to treat the injury. Our vets put a special splint on Gwen. Unfortunately some complications from the splint led to a foot infection that didn't respond to our normal antibiotics.

Now Gwen has fully recovered, is walking sound on that leg and will be able to go on and enjoy a career as a breeding ewe.

Some conditions have a quick and easy fix, for those that don't your team at The Vet Clinic will support you every step of the way

If this beautiful dog is looking a bit sorry for himself, it's because he had just gotten to the river near Henley lake for a fun play and swim when his owners noticed the toxic algae and bundled him back into the car and straight to the clinic. There we made him vomit everything in his stomach to minimize the risk of absorbing the toxic algae. Because he was treated before showing signs, he now has a chance of surviving the toxins. Too bad we can't explain to him that it's for his own good!
The council website has more details about which areas of the Masterton rivers are affected. Keep dogs away from affected areas, and ring us if your dogs are showing any signs of toxicity.

🚨 Toxic algae warning 🚨

Red alert level warnings are in place at Ruamähanga River from Double Bridges to Kokotau, due to the presence of moderate amounts of toxic algae mats on the river's edge.

Greater Wellington Regional Council advises people not to swim or let dogs near the water from Doubles Bridge to Kokotau, including Te Ore Ore and The Cliffs. Dogs should not be allowed to scavenge on riverbanks where algal mats may accumulate.

Even a small amount of toxic algae, the size of a 50-cent piece, can potentially be fatal for your dogs if not make them very ill!

🩺🏥 CLINIC UPDATE 🏥🩺

We have to admit, this year has absolutely flown by! We love updating you all on all things clinic life and well, we’ve been a little slack! So here’s a wee update for you all before we really enter the busy season!

There has been some amazing cases, opportunities for learning and our team have quite simply had a really big year! This all wouldn’t be possible without you all. Your trust, support and loyalty makes a difference.

We know you have a choice, so we thank you for choosing us to be your trusted vet clinic.

• After 10 amazing years, we're evolving to better serve our community. As part of this change, come February Louisa Broughton will be starting her own equine veterinary business.

• The clinic sponsored and attended an amazing event Paerata Abraham and Llyr Jones attempted the 8 hour strong wool lamb record at Whitespurs Station - this was an amazing experience and effort by all involved.

• The clinic has experienced many different species over the last few weeks. From helping moreporks to magpie leg amputation, horses stuck in sewer drains and kittens..lots of kittens oh and a baby piglet got her hernia removed!

• We have worked really hard with our suppliers to create discounts or promotional offers to help our community during the hard season, with our vaccination promotion helping over 147 animals receive a vaccine in the month of November. Massive shout out to the team Zoetis for helping us make this possible.

• We had team members graduate, complete marathons, move over the ditch and as of last Friday we farewelled Kate who was a valuable member of our team for 10 years.

• The team has completed more faecal egg counts than you would believe! These are a crucial factor for our rural communities and our team work super hard smashing these out. Again, not every day is kittens and puppies !

• We have had a great amount of training and education from our supporting business including Southern Cross pet insurance, Royal Canin and Hill’s Pet Nutrition and our friend pip from Dogs101NZ took us through some training on the great use of muzzles for safety! This ensures we can provide you all with up to date knowledge and trusted information.

Keep your eyes pealed for our Christmas / New Years hours! 🤍
