The very brave Nala came to visit us lately. She has been trying to protect her territory, and managed to get an awful cat bite abscess in the process. She was much sicker than she initially looked - luckily, she has lovely owners, and is a very strong feline. So, now her main problem is the unfortunate haircut she required to get her surgery all sorted. Sorry Nala, we promise the fur will grow back!

Meet Millie!
This most gorgeous kitten has had the unfortunate discomfort of soft / smelly poo 💩 and underweight for many weeks. She has had tried all the usual diet modification, supplements and pro / pre biotics to no avail.
Her lovely owner agreed to some further testing, and we used the rather fabulous Idexx PCR diarrhea panel to ascertain that she actually had a Clostridial infection grumbling along in her bowel. These can actually be part of another problem, so we were hopeful but not completely convinced the simple course of antibiotics and continued diet modification would do the trick..
But! Her recheck shows a thriving kitten, bright, happy, putting on weight. So happy to see!
And, no longer passing foul farts - what a win 👏 #👏

Strangles update!
All looks like is being contained in the Waikato, however, it's still really good to be prepared, especially if your horse goes out to other places.
We have heard that a new Strangles vaccine import may be on the horizon - please email us if you missed out on the last lot, and want to get on the waiting list for when they do arrive. [email protected]
The NZVA has put out this super handy flow chart for owners.
Thanks all!

Bird Flu in NZ: How to Keep Your Cat Safe

With the recent detection of H5N1 bird flu in New Zealand's wild birds, it's important to know how to protect your feline friends. While the risk to cats is low, they can become infected through contact with sick birds.

Here are some simple steps to keep your cat safe:

* Keep Cats Indoors: This is the best way to prevent them from hunting or encountering infected birds.
* Avoid Raw Food: Do not feed your cat raw poultry or unpasteurized milk, as these can be sources of the virus.
* Keep Your Distance: Don't let your pets touch or go near sick or dead birds.
* Watch for Symptoms: Look for fever, lethargy, appetite loss, or respiratory signs. If your cat seems unwell, contact your vet immediately.

Found sick or dead birds?
Report groups of 3 or more to the Biosecurity NZ hotline: 0800 80 99 66. Do not touch them.
