📸 Let’s help Graham get the gorgeous Flynn a top spot in the 2027 SPCA Calendar!

Graham and his family adopted Flynn from Whakatāne SPCA and now live in Northland. A talented photographer, Graham is currently raising funds to support the SPCA and the work we do for animals in need.

According to Graham, Flynn has been the perfect addition to their family. Now 12 years old, Flynn is also a qualified Therapy Dog who regularly works with children at a wonderful Northland school, where his human mum is the principal. Flynn has a special talent for supporting neurodiverse students, making a real difference in their lives.

How incredible is that?

If you’d like to support Graham’s fundraising efforts and help shine a spotlight on this very special boy, click the link below to make a donation. We could even get Flynn on to the cover! 🤞

A huge thank you to Leanne for her incredibly generous donation of hand-knitted, lined woollen blankets for our animals. ❤️

With winter well and truly here, these beautiful blankets will help keep our cats and kittens warm, cosy and comfortable while they wait for their forever homes. The fact that each one has been lovingly knitted and lined makes them extra special. Little Nemo absolutely loves his!

We are so grateful for the kindness and support of people like Leanne, who give their time and talents to help the animals in our care. Thank you for making such a difference to their lives. 🐾

Today is a very special occasion, it’s the one year adoption anniversary of our gorgeous Pablo!!

Pablo came into our care as a young puppy with his 6 siblings - they all gradually got adopted but Pablo was constantly overlooked and he stayed with us for nearly a year.

His wonderful adoptive mum Annemieke has sent us this heart warming update….

“We adopted Pablo on 11th June last year, can’t believe he’s been with us a year!

Taking on a long-stay shelter dog had some different challenges, mainly that Pablo was over a year old and hadn’t been exposed to many things that we take for granted - children, cars, other animals, loud noises.

Consequently he was quite spooky, however we found ways to help him get used to the outside world; take things slowly, talk to him in a calm voice when exposing him to new things. He spends a lot of time with our two other family dogs which helped him a lot too.

He has his crate which is his safe space, and if he was getting overwhelmed he could have some quiet time in there.

He’s a different dog now - happy and goofy, his favourite thing is to run around with his dog sister Suki and dog cousin Grace, bark at anyone coming up our street (he’s discovered his voice) and sneak onto the couch for snoozes when we’re not looking.

He’s such a happy boy and we’re so happy we found him!”

Happy adoption anniversary Pablo!! 🏠

📣 Puppies Before Profit – Bring in Breeder Laws! 📣

Today, we’re launching our Puppies Before Profit campaign, to raise awareness around New Zealand’s lack of dog breeding legislation and to build support for law reforms.

Currently, we’re FAR behind other countries when it comes to dog breeding laws. In New Zealand:

🐾 Anyone can breed and sell puppies
🐾 There are no restrictions on the number of breeding dogs a person can keep
🐾 There are no minimum supervision levels
🐾 There are no minimum or maximum ages for breeding
🐾 There are no maximum number of litters across a dog’s lifetime
🐾 There are no restrictions on close inbreeding.

Despite the current lack of specific rules, our recently commissioned survey found that 96% of New Zealanders think dog breeding should be regulated.

This isn’t a niche animal welfare issue. It’s something that New Zealanders deeply care about. We need clear, enforceable standards that apply to all breeders, and ensure every breeding dog receives appropriate care ❤️

This is what NOT desexing your pet looks like.

This tiny kitten and his sibling arrived into our care early last week - not only was he cold and wet, he was sick, underweight, and covered in fleas. The two of them had been found out in the bush, and they must have been out there during the 3 days of torrential rain that we had just had prior.

We have named him Nemo and he is now being fostered by a staff member. Unfortunately his sibling was too far gone, and the only thing we could do was to help that one peacefully pass over 🌈 💔

This situation was entirely preventable.

We have been inundated with dumped/found kittens for the past 8 months. And puppies? It’s even worse. We are getting calls every day from Northlanders with unwanted litters of pups.

Please help us break the cycle, by getting ALL your pets desexed. It is the kindest and most responsible thing a pet owner can do - it prevents suffering before these unwanted animals are born. Even if your cat or dog is already pregnant, they can likely still be desexed now and prevent their next litter.

Contact our centre now for your FREE desexing voucher, the surgery is then done at a local vet clinic closest to you (we have a list for you to choose from). Call us on 09 407 7515 within our opening hours, and the voucher will be emailed to you.

Please share this information all over the Far North; we know many people are not on social media.

In the meantime, little Nemo is getting huge amounts of TLC - he is a very lucky kitty.

Dog owners! Do you need advice on trimming your pet's nails? 🐕️ We know it can sometimes be a daunting task, and many dogs (and owners!) are nervous when it comes to getting this done.

We've created a helpful guide explaining how to know if your dog's nails need trimming, important things to be aware of, and when to seek veterinary advice ❤️ Understanding the anatomy of the dog's nail is crucial in ensuring you can do this safely (avoiding the inner 'quick'), while keeping your dog happy and healthy.

Check out the detailed guide on our website, and please share this to help other dog owners in the community: https://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/trimming-your-dogs-nails

🚀 Meet Rocket & Ramen 🍜

Rocket and Ramen have been patiently waiting for their forever home for quite some time, and while they may not be the first cats to rush up and introduce themselves, they just might be the most rewarding.

These sweet sisters arrived back in February, with their mother and siblings. They have been continuously overlooked due to their initial shyness with new people, and after spending so long together in care now, they’ve formed a special bond and need a home where they can stay side by side.

Ramen is the braver of the two, often leading the way and showing Rocket that new people and new experiences aren’t so scary after all. Rocket prefers to take things at her own pace, but with Ramen by her side, her confidence continues to grow.

They may be shy at first, but underneath those cautious exteriors are two gentle girls looking for a family willing to give them the time and patience they deserve. Watching them blossom and seeing their trust grow will be a truly rewarding experience. We offer 15% off both their adoption fees when two animals are adopted together.

If you’ve got room in your heart and home for a pair of overlooked sisters who deserve their happy ending, Rocket and Ramen are ready to launch into their next adventure together. 💕🐾
