Whether we like it or not, guy fawkes is here. Like humans, animals can do impossible things when scared or full of adrenaline. If you have furry family members who don’t do well with fireworks, now is the perfect time to do a final house and property check:

- all gates and exterior doors secured? (Tie shut for the night if any doubts)
- Any under fence gaps missed?
- Any loose panels or wiggle fence boards?
- Microchip details up to date on NZCAR?
- Collar ready with name tag on when going out for a walk or toilet break? For super scared pups consider toileting on a lead tonight
- Backyard hazards such as kids toys, fairy lights, tools or hoses that panicking pets could get tangled in sorted?

Finally, check outside before toilet breaks, especially tomorrow morning, for any firework debris that might have come over fences. Cardboard, plastic caps, fuses all smell very interesting.

It’s time to talk about the birds and the bees!

A few minutes of fun can have a lifetime of consequences and fireworks are anything but harmless. They can cause panic, injury, and even death for wildlife, pets, people and livestock.

Please keep fireworks to the 5th when people and animals can prepare or even better, give them a miss altogether.

The impacts of fireworks go farther than you think.

Great news today and a huge win for NZ. From the 25th September nationwide chained dog laws come into effect 🥳. This gives animal welfare agencies a much better chance of freeing dogs from terrible conditions. Still work to be done but definitely a move in the right direction. Great work to the charities involved in getting this through especially Chained Dog Awareness NZ

Precious Cargo:
Eight years ago, Smokey* went missing, leaving his brothers and human family heartbroken and searching for him ever since. Tragically, he was hit by a car and passed away last night.

The saddest thing is that his family missed out on 8 years with him when a chip check at the local vet would have had him home that night 😔

Smokey finally had a bittersweet reunification with his family. We made a very special trip to Palmerston North bring him home, to be with one of his brothers who also passed last week.
I like to think this was his brother, helping out from beyond the rainbow bridge to get his wee body home to the right place

Next vet visit is always a great time to check your furry friend is microchipped with details up to date. Make sure they’re registered on the New Zealand Companion Animal Register too so they can get home to you if found.

If you find an animal, please take them to the closest vet for a free scan or let us know.

Happy holidays and a very Merry Christmas from Animal Reunification Kāpiti. We look forward to getting back into helping after the 13th January.

Time slowly heals the sudden loss of our Remy and we welcomed a new family member this year, Alfie.
