Introducing Jodie π our Co-Founder and trainer at K9 Connections
Like Pettina, Jodie grew up around dogs and developed a natural bond for them from an early age. She joined the New Zealand Customs Detector Dog Unit in 2016, beginning her operational career with detector dog Anika. πΆ Together, they achieved outstanding results, becoming the first team to achieve full marks at New Zealand Customs internal trials four consecutive years in a row. They also qualified for the Police National Dog Trials four times, competing twice and placing third and fourth in New Zealand. π
Following Anika's retirement, Jodie continued her operational work with her second detector dog, Tane. Working with two very different dogs strengthened her understanding of individual canine behaviour, adaptability and the importance of recognising the subtle cues dogs display while working through a problem.
During her operational career, Jodie mentored several new handlers before spending two years supporting the training team. In this role, she helped prepare new dogs for training courses, assisted with course delivery and conducted advanced searches for operational handlers.
Jodie's passion lies in understanding canine behaviour, particularly the subtle, non-traditional cues dogs use during scent detection and problem-solving. This interest led her to co-found K9 Connections with Pettina, where she can share her specialist knowledge with everyday dog owners and scent work enthusiasts, helping them develop their skills and build stronger, more connected partnerships with their dogs. π
