Nicking a pet with scissors while trying to cut out a mat is easily one of the things we see owners feeling most guilty about in clinic.

When you feel a stubborn mat, the instinct is to grab a pair of scissors for a quick snip.

But because pet skin is remarkably thin and elastic, it is horrifyingly easy to accidentally cut them with scissors.

If you’ve ever been tempted, next time swap the scissors for a pair of electric clippers (yes, a human beard trimmer will do if that’s all you have), or leave the tricky mats to a professional groomer.

And if an accidental snip ever happens at home? Stay calm. Flip to the wound chapter in your Pet Illnesses & Emergencies book and follow steps to control bleeding and temporary bandaging before heading to your vet.

Have you ever had a close call with a stubborn hair mat? Let us know in the comments.

The #1 mistake we see with vet wrap (self-adhesive bandage)? Applying it straight off the roll!

It’s natural to feel like you should wrap tightly so the bandage actually stays on without slipping. But because vet wrap is so naturally stretchy, pulling it straight off the roll causes it to contract on the limb and cut off circulation.

✅ The simple vet trick: Always unroll a length first, then loosely reroll it back up before you begin bandaging. This removes tension so it glides on comfortably, stays snug, and protects circulation. After applying you should be able to ease your finger in under the top of the bandage.

(A quick reminder that bandaging is temporary first aid only. Any wound severe enough to need a bandage should be seen by a vet!)

Save this post for the next time you need to use your first aid bandaging skills, and check out our book Pet Illnesses & Emergencies for full step-by-step instructions on first aid bandaging (page 133)!

Next time your dog or cat is sound asleep, take 60 seconds to count their breaths.

Checking their resting breathing rate is one of the easiest ways to monitor their heart and lung health from the comfort of your couch.

⏱️ The Magic Number: A healthy dog or cat should take fewer than 30 breaths per minute while at rest (completely relaxed or sleeping).

How to check it:
1️⃣ Wait until your pet is asleep or deeply relaxed (not dreaming, panting, or purring).
2️⃣ Count the number of breaths your pet takes in 60 seconds (Each time their chest rises and falls is a breath).
3️⃣ Alternatively, count for 30 seconds and multiply by 2.

When to book a vet appointment:
If you consistently count a resting rate higher than 30 breaths per minute, call your veterinarian. Don’t panic over a one-off high reading. They might just be having a vivid dream. But if that elevated number is repeated across multiple checks, it can be an early warning sign of heart or respiratory changes.

When a pet emergency hits, adrenaline takes over. But you can protect them before you even reach the clinic door.

Basic first aid knowledge is essential for every pet owner and recognising when they need immediate medical care can literally save your pet’s life.

If you need to rush your pet to the vet hospital, taking 30 seconds to call the hospital first can make all the difference. It allows vet staff to give you fast, over-the-phone guidance based on the first aid you’ve already started, while their team preps equipment for your arrival. (Of course, if calling ahead isn’t possible just focus on getting there safely).

Save your closest emergency vet’s number in your phone contacts right now.

And to make sure you have the exact tools and knowledge to handle that critical gap between home and the clinic, check the link in bio for the gold standard in pet first aid care at home.
