KAT Centre is a non-profit organization established to promote animal welfare in Nepal. Please read more about our work in detail: www.katcentre.org
KAT Centre was founded in 2004 by Jan Salter, a British woman living in Nepal who was determined to find a humane solution to the problem of street dog over-population. In our sixteen year history, we have grown steadily to the point where we are now the biggest and oldest animal welfare organisation in Nepal. As we have grown, our location has changed several times, but the founding principals an
d our work remain the same:
- To rescue and treat sick and injured animals living on the streets of Kathmandu.
- To lower the street dog (and cat) population by spaying and neutering.
- To reduce the incidence of rabies and other viruses through vaccination and education.
- To promote animal welfare in the widest sense of the term. We are constantly looking ahead and developing our long term strategy for the continued management and protection of the street animals of Kathmandu.

Our spay/neuter campaign in Manang has ended and it reminds us that every effort is worth it. Catching dogs here was not easy at all — it took patience, teamwork, and a lot of determination. But seeing them safe and ready for surgery makes it all worthwhile. Huge respect to our hardworking team for never giving up on these dogs. 💖🐾
A heartfelt thank you to the Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality, the wonderful local community, and our dedicated team for making this possible. Your support, care, and hard work have made a real difference 🙏

Day 1 of our Spay/Neuter Campaign in Manang 🐶🐱
Today marks the beginning of our campaign in collaboration with Manang Ngisyang Rural Municipality. Conducting such a program in this remote area is not easy – the roads, the altitude, and the challenges of setting up everything here test our limits. But seeing the dedication of the community and knowing how much these dogs’ lives will improve makes it all worth it. 🐾❤️
We are truly grateful to the municipality and local community members for their support and assistance in making this possible. Together, we are building a healthier and kinder future for both the dogs and the people who love them. 🙏
We also want to apologize for any delays in responding to your messages during this time. Once we return to Kathmandu, we will update you and resume regular services.
Stay tuned for more updates from Manang – and thank you for standing with us on this journey. 🌄🐶

Adoption Appeal 🙏🐶
Meet Coco, a beautiful Golden Retriever with a story that breaks our hearts. He was rescued after being abandoned and left wounded, his body infested with maggots. 💔 After a long recovery, Coco was adopted — but sadly, he was returned in just one day.
Now, Coco is waiting again for a real family who will love him forever. Coco deserves stability, care, and a lifetime of love. He’s fully vaccinated and neutered. So if you can open your heart and home to Coco, please dm us or call us at 9801912476/9801912477. Let’s find him a forever home together.

The past few days in Nepal have been heartbreaking for all of us. While people everywhere are struggling through this difficult time, our community dogs are also silently affected.
If you see a dog or a cat that is injured or in urgent need of help, please call us directly at 9801912476. Despite the restrictions, we will do our very best to reach and help them. 🐾
We also kindly request everyone to offer shelter and care to the community dogs around you. Even a safe corner, a little food, or a warm place can mean the world to them right now. ♥️
Together, let’s make sure no life is left behind in this time of hardship. 🐶✨

From pain to hope: Maya’s journey 💖
When Maya was first rescued, she was suffering from a severe case of CTVT, a type of cancer for dogs that left her in unbearable pain. It was affecting her eyes and also other areas of her body. But with timely treatment, lots of care, and her own incredible willpower, she is now healing beautifully. 🐾
Her recovery reminds us why it’s so important to never give up on street dogs who are struggling. KAT is one of the few places in Nepal where dogs with this condition can be treated and it is something we are particularly proud of. Every life is worth saving, and every dog deserves love and a second chance. 💖
Another successful CTVT recovery, and we couldn’t be prouder of this brave girl! 🌸🐶
Donate on our website to help us rescue more dogs like Maya!

Thank you to our hero Priyanka who is raising money for KAT Centre! Priyanka is arriving in Nepal soon and will be bringing supplies and volunteering with us before doing two treks in Bhutan.
Priyanka said "I’d very much appreciate any support to help KAT Centre and save animal lives directly, but also as encouragement of what I know is going to be the most physically and emotionally demanding trip I’ve ever been on."
"I’ll be doing two treks (something I’ve never really done properly before) and thought it would be a good opportunity for a fundraiser. I then learnt about the amazing, life saving work that KAT do and will now be volunteering there while in Nepal!"
"I’ve seen photos of the animals that have been helped by KAT and the incredible transformation of them being happy and healthy after getting desperately needed treatment."
Please share and give her some support! ❤️💪

52 dogs vaccinated against rabies in Godawari 🐶🐾
A rabies outbreak was recently reported in Godawari. As soon as we were informed by the municipality, our team immediately rushed to the area. In just one day, our hardworking team managed to vaccinate 52 dogs in the area, protecting not only the dogs but also the entire community from this dangerous virus.
We are grateful to the municipality for coordinating with us and to the local people who helped us reach the dogs. Together, we can fight rabies and make our communities safer for both animals and humans. 🐾❤️

We are the Kathmandu Animal Treatment Centre (KAT Centre) and since 2004 we have provided free vet care for over 30,000 street dogs in Kathmandu.
Since being founded 15 years ago we have been working tirelessly in Kathmandu to improve the conditions for people and animals. We are based in Budhanilkantha and can be reached from Golfutar Main Road by taking a right onto Deuba Chowk, 50m after passing Park Village Resort Hotel, and following the signs to KAT Centre.
Our work can be divided into four categories:
- Rescue and Treatment - rescuing sick and injured street dogs and bringing them to KAT Centre, giving them medicine, treating their wounds, fixing their broken bones, and performing surgery to cure cancer. We also provide medicine for dogs with skin disease and other less serious conditions.
- Animal Birth Control - collecting female dogs from the streets and performing surgery to prevent them from having babies. This reduces the street dog population and makes it easier for the female dogs to live peacefully.
- Rabies Prevention - we vaccinate street dogs and use education and awareness initiatives to instruct people on how to avoid dog bites, and what to do if they are bitten.
- Activism - we support all kinds of initiatives to improve conditions for animals in Nepal, including sharing information about animal welfare and animal cruelty, promoting adoptions, and petitioning the government and police to make harsher punishments for people who abuse animals.
Everything that we do is free, we are a non-profit organisation and we rely upon the generosity of members of the public who support our work through donations of money and items.
