Is chocolate poisonous for dogs? The answer is yes!

However, the dog's risk depends on the type of chocolate, the size of the dog, and the amount ingested.

The chocolate component that is toxic to dogs is called theobromine. While humans easily metabolize theobromine, dogs do it much more slowly, allowing it to accumulate in their body to toxic levels.

Size matters

A big dog can ingest much more chocolate than a small dog, before it starts to have side effects. It should also be remembered that different types of chocolate have different levels of theobromine. Cocoa, chocolate to cook and chocolate black contain the highest levels, while milk chocolate and white chocolate have the lowest. If a dog consumes a small amount of chocolate, it will probably only cause a stomach upset. They could vomit or have diarrhea. However, greater amounts will have more serious effects. In sufficient quantities, theobromine can produce muscle tremors, seizures, an irregular heart beat, internal bleeding, or a heart attack.

What is there to watch

The initial phase of theobromine poisoning is usually manifested with severe hyperactivity. You shouldn't worry if a dog has eaten a candy bar or zapped the last ounce of a chocolate tablet, because this doesn't provide a dose of theobromine high enough to hurt them.

However, a small dog who has eaten a box of chocolates should receive medical veterinary care immediately. And if it's chocolate black or bitter, in any amount, it's better to be cautious. Black chocolate's high level of theobromine means only a small amount to be poisoned: only 25 grams can be enough to poison a 20-pound dog. The usual treatment of theobromine poisoning consists inducing vomit within two hours of intake.
