78 years ago, on May 10th 1945, a total of 48 young men from Great Britain and Australia lost their lives in three different air accidents, only two days after VE day.

The men and their families gave us all the ultimate sacrifice, and their today, so that we can have our tomorrow.

20 of the young men died here, deep down in this ravine, close to Gardermoen airfield, when Short Stirling LK147 crashed.

The first Memorial Service was arranged here in May 2012. Almost 40 relatives came to Norway from UK and Australia, to remember a brother, father, grandfather and uncle.

On Wednesday May 10th 2023, we remembered them.

Lest We Forget 🌹

There are 101 graves at the Commonwealth War Grave Plot at Vestre gravlund cemetery in Oslo. 100 soldiers from the UK and Commonwealth countries - and 1 Norwegian.

In the last days of World War 2, a plane carrying UK officials from Great Dunmow, Essex to Norway to facilitate the German surrender tragically went down in Sørkedalen just North of Oslo. Aboard the plane were 20 Brits, 3 Canadians and Norwegian Major Petter Kato Juliebø.

Although the Commonwealth War Graves are reserved for British and Commonwealth service personnel, a special exception was made so that he could rest alongside his comrades.

His story is only one among many.

There are 75 Commonwealth War Grave Plots spread across Norway. If you would like to find out more about the fallen British and Commonwealth soldiers buried in Norway, visit this site: https://www.cwgc.org/visit-us/find-cemeteries-memorials/search-results/?Country=Norway&Lat=0&Lon=0&Locality=null&Name=&CasualtiesRange=0&Size=100&Page=1

Sunday 17th September 1944, the start of Operation Market Garden
The first lift of the British 1st Airborne Division took off from various airfields spread from Lincolnshire, to Dorset, and Gloucestershire to Kent. The parachute element consisted of the 1st Parachute Brigade and the glider-borne element was mainly the 1st Air Landing Brigade and some Divisional Units, such as the 1st Airborne Reconnaissance Squadron.
The aim was for the Reconnaissance Squadron to ‘dash’ to the main road bridge in Arnhem, and hold it until the three Parachute Battalion’s of the 1st Parachute Brigade marched from their Drop Zone to reinforce them.

The Airborne Assault Museum & the Parachute Regiment Lodge are hosting a screening of the film "Theirs is the Glory", telling the story of the battle and the involvement of the British Airborne forces, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of its premiere.
Follow the link to book your tickets to join us on Saturday 25th September 2021 for an exceptional evening in a unique location, Freemasons' Hall, in the heart of London:
