We usually separate between two types of sound we hear from joints.
One type sounds like a little click or a little pop. This is usually caused by gas being released from the synovial fluid when it gets into a certain position. This sound is called cavitation and can also occur during sudden movement or when a chiropractor manipulates the joints.

The second kind of sound is creaking. This often occurs if there’s damage from wear and tear in joints – for example, in a dog with arthrosis. These creaks are often heard every time the joint is moved in a specific way, and this sound is called crepitation. The loudness of the creak doesn’t indicate the seriousness of the wear. Some dogs have a lot of creaking sounds in their joints without having serious wear, and others can have loads of wear and tear in their joints without ever creaking – it varies from individual to individual.
