Newly bought local (indigenous) chickens need a little care at the start to avoid losses.

Here’s a simple but effective checklist 👇

1️⃣ Quarantine First (Very Important)
Isolate them for 10–14 days

✅️Prevents introducing diseases to your old birds.

✅️Observe for cough, diarrhea, weakness, lice, or sneezing.

2️⃣ Give Water Before Feed
First 24 hours: clean water only

✅️Add multivitamins + glucose/electrolyte.

✅️Helps them recover from transport stress

3️⃣ Deworming
Deworm after 3–5 days of settling

Repeat after 2 weeks.

4️⃣ External Parasite Control

✅️Check for lice, mites, hi...

✅️Dust with poultry insecticide or use approved spray.

✅️Clean and disinfect housing.

5️⃣ Vaccination (Don’t Skip This)
At minimum:

✅️Newcastle disease (Lasota or Komarov).

✅️Fowl pox (if common in your area).

✅️Local birds are hardy, but not immune.

6️⃣ Gradual Feeding

✅️Start with familiar grains (maize, millet)

✅️Introduce new feed gradually.

✅️Always provide clean water.

7️⃣ Proper Housing

✅️Dry, well-ventilated, no cold drafts
✅️Protect from rain, predators, and thieves
✅️Avoid overcrowding

8️⃣ Daily Observation

✅️Watch appetite, droppings, movement.

✅️Any sick bird separate immediately.

9️⃣ Biosecurity

✅️Wash hands after handling new birds.
✅️Don’t share equipment with old flock.
✅️Limit visitors to the poultry area.

Key Reminder

Most deaths in newly bought local chickens come from stress hidden infections.

MOULTING IN POULTRY 🐔 (Every Farmer Should Know This!)

Have your layers suddenly stopped laying eggs and started losing feathers?
Don’t panic it might be moulting, not disease.

What is moulting?

Moulting is a natural process where chickens shed old feathers and grow new ones. During this time, egg production drops or stops because the bird’s body redirects energy to feather growth.

When does it happen?

✔️ Usually once a year
✔️ Common in older layers (60–90 weeks)
✔️ Often during cold or dry seasons

Signs of moulting

✅️Sudden drop in egg production
✅️Feather loss around neck, wings, and body
✅️Dull-looking birds
✅️Reduced activity

What farmers should do

✅ Increase protein in feed (feathers are protein)
✅ Provide vitamins & minerals (A, D, E, methionine, biotin)
✅ Ensure clean water always
✅ Reduce stress (no overcrowding or rough handling)
✅ Control lice and mites

Good news!

After moulting, birds often return to lay with better egg size and shell quality 🥚✨

⚠️ Note:
Moulting is not a disease. Wrong management during moulting causes losses, not moulting itself.

How true is this ?

Using rop on your sheep or Goat neck won't allow them grow well.

It’s mostly a myth, but with an important warning.

Using a rope on a sheep or goat’s neck does not automatically stop growth. Animals grow based on nutrition, genetics, health, and management, not rope alone.

However, problems happen when:

✅️The rope is too tight.

✅️It’s left on for a long time without adjustment.

✅️It causes pain, wounds, choking, or stress

In such cases, the animal may eat less, get stressed, lose weight, and then appear “not to grow well.”

Best practice:

Use a loose, adjustable collar or tether, check it regularly, and never tie tightly around the neck especially in growing animals.

So yes 👉 poor tethering affects growth, not the rope itself.

Automatic IM Injector for poultry vaccination

✅️The machine can do single or double injections.

✅️The activation of 3 detection points in the mould ensures good positioning of the birds and guarantees the correct site of injection.

✅️Furthermore, it reduces significantly the risk of accidental injection to vaccination crews.

Going broody - it is when a hen decides she wants to be a mother and starts sitting on her eggs to incubate them.

✅️It takes 21 days for chicken eggs to hatch.

✅️Feed and water should be close to the hen.

✅️She uses a massive amount of her body stores in order to protect her clutch and care for her eggs.

Poultry Farm Starting Guide:

𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗮 𝗣𝗼𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗙𝗮𝗿𝗺? 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’s 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗘𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲!

Thinking about venturing into poultry farming?
Whether you’re a newbie or looking to refine your setup, these 9 critical factors will set you up for success.
Let’s dive in!

1. 🏠 Housing System:
Your birds’ home is their fortress!
Poor housing leads to disease outbreaks and stunted growth. Invest in a skilled poultry house mason to design a well-ventilated, secure, and spacious shelter.

Cost alert:
Housing is your second-largest expense after feed.

Pro tip:
Proper housing solves 40% of potential problems. Avoid overcrowding and ensure easy waste management.

2. 🌾 Feed & Feeding:
Feed costs eat up 60–70% of your budget!
Plan wisely:
✅️Buy vs. Make:

New farmers should purchase feed until they break even.
Making your own (for 500+ birds) cuts costs by 50%, but requires machinery like grinders and mixers.
✅️Quality matters:
Proper nutrition ensures growth, health, and productivity.

3. 📊 Record Keeping:
Track everything!
Records reveal profit margins, mortality rates, and flaws in your system.
✅️Log daily feed intake, egg production, bird count, and expenses.
✅️Avoid the “guesswork” trap—some farmers can’t even count their flock!

4. 🔍 Monitor Changes:
Be alert to shifts in:

✅️Behavior(e.g., noisy layers preparing to lay eggs).
✅️Droppings (changes signal disease).
✅️Feeding patterns (sudden drops may indicate illness).
Quick action saves lives—call a vet if something’s off!

5. 🐥 Types of Birds:
Choose your flock wisely:

✅️Chickens (layers for eggs, broilers for meat).
✅️Ducks, Turkeys, Geese (niche markets, different care needs).
✅️Source quality: Only buy F1 chicks from reputable breeders.

6. 🎯 Areas of Focus:
Decide your niche:

✅️Egg production 🥚
✅️Meat processing 🍗
✅️Breeding/hatching 🐣
✅️Feed production or poultry product packaging.

7. 💰 Capital:
Poultry farming demands upfront investment.

This diagram is explaining grading-up (upgrading) crossbreeding in goats (same principle applies to sheep/cattle).
It shows what happens when you continuously mate crossbred females back to a pure (100%) exotic/improved buck.

The principle

Each time you mate a crossbred animal to a 100% purebred sire, the offspring carries more genes of the purebred and fewer genes of the local breed.

Genetically, the formula is:
Offspring % = (Dam % + Sire %) ÷ 2
Since the sire is always 100%, the percentage keeps increasing.

Step-by-step explanation

F1 generation
Local doe (0%) × Pure buck (100%)
(0 + 100) ÷ 2 = 50%
Result: F1 = 50% exotic
This animal still shows many local traits.

F2 generation
F1 (50%) × Pure buck (100%)
(50 + 100) ÷ 2 = 75%
Result: F2 = 75% exotic
Better growth, conformation, productivity.

F3 generation
F2 (75%) × Pure buck (100%)
(75 + 100) ÷ 2 = 87.5%
Result: F3 = 87.5% exotic
Very close to purebred in appearance.

F4 generation
F3 (87.5%) × Pure buck (100%)
(87.5 + 100) ÷ 2 = 93.75%
Result: F4 = 93.75%
Performs almost like a purebred.

F5 generation
F4 (93.75%) × Pure buck (100%)
(93.75 + 100) ÷ 2 = 96.9%
Result: F5 ≈ 97%
Genetically very close to pure.

F6 generation
F5 (96.9%) × Pure buck (100%)
≈ 98–99% (often regarded as 100%)
Practically indistinguishable from purebred.

Why farmers use this system

✅ Rapid genetic improvement.
✅ Higher growth rate & body size.
✅ Better milk/meat production.
✅ Cheaper than importing many pure animals.

Important caution (very important)
As percentage increases:

❌ Adaptability to local climate reduces.
❌ Disease resistance may drop.
❌ Requires better feeding, housing, and health care.

This is why 75–87.5% is often the best balance for smallholder farmers in Nigeria, not full 100%.

In simple words

✅️Each backcross to a pure buck pushes the animal closer to purebred.
✅️After 5–6 generations, it is almost fully exotic.
✅️Productivity increases, but management demands also increase.
