🚨 Know The Disease!
Topic: Brucellosis — The Silent Killer of Livestock and Humans

Brucellosis is one of the most dangerous diseases in livestock farming — not just because it kills animals, but because it can infect humans too! ⚠️
🔴 What causes it?
A bacteria called Brucella — spread through contact with infected animals, milk, urine or birth fluids

🔴 Symptoms in animals:
Abortion in pregnant females
Stillborn or weak offspring
Reduced milk production
Infertility in both males and females
Swollen joints and lameness

🔴 Symptoms in humans:
Fever and sweating
Joint and muscle pain
Fatigue and weakness
Can become chronic if untreated

🔴 Prevention:
✅ Vaccinate all cattle, sheep and goats regularly
✅ Always wear gloves when handling animal births
✅ Never drink raw unpasteurised milk
✅ Isolate and test new animals before joining the herd
✅ Report suspected cases to a veterinarian immediately

A goat has rectangular pupils instead of round ones like humans!

This unique eye shape gives goats an almost 340-degree field of vision — allowing them to spot predators from nearly every direction without even moving their head.
This is why goats are incredibly difficult to sneak up on and why they are naturally alert and cautious animals.

As veterinarians, understanding the anatomy and sensory capabilities of each species helps us handle them better, stress them less and treat them more effectively. 🐐👁️

Topic: What Nobody Tells You About Studying Veterinary Medicine

People hear "Veterinary Doctor" and imagine a glamorous life surrounded by cute animals. 🐶🐱
The reality? It is one of the most demanding, humbling and rewarding academic journeys you can take.
Here is what veterinary school actually looks like:
📖 Memorising the anatomy of multiple species — not just one
🔬 Long hours in laboratories and clinics
💉 Learning to handle animals that do not always cooperate
😴 Late night studies before exams
🌾 Field work in all weather conditions
❤️ Falling in love with every animal you treat
But then there are those moments —
When a sick animal recovers under your care.
When a farmer thanks you with tears in his eyes.
When you realise that your knowledge just saved a family's income.
That is why we do it. 🐾🩺

To every veterinary student out there — keep going. The world needs you. 💪

🤝 Field Friday!
Topic: Why Veterinary Outreach Matters in Rural Nigeria

During our Veterinary Outreach programs across Kebbi State in 2023, 2024 and 2025, one thing became very clear to me:

Most livestock farmers in rural Nigeria have never seen a veterinarian.
They lose animals to diseases that are entirely preventable.
They watch their livelihoods disappear to conditions that cost almost nothing to treat.
They make do with traditional remedies passed down through generations — some helpful, many harmful.
This is not their fault. It is a gap — a gap in access, education and resources.
That is why veterinary outreach is not just a service. It is a lifeline.
Every vaccination given, every farmer educated, every sick animal treated in the field is a family supported and a community strengthened. 🌍🐾

This is why I chose veterinary medicine.
And this is why I will never stop going to the field. 💪
Thank you UDUSOK for giving me that opportunity.

Topic: The Importance of Clean Water for Livestock

Did you know that water is the most essential nutrient for any farm animal?

A dairy cow can drink up to 50 litres of water or more per day and water deprivation for even a few hours can significantly reduce milk production and overall health.

Here are 3 simple water management tips for every farmer:
💧 Always provide clean, fresh water — dirty water spreads disease
💧 Check water troughs daily for algae, dirt or contamination
💧 During hot seasons, increase water availability, animals drink more in heat
Healthy animals start with clean water. It costs little but saves everything. 🐄🌊
