Open letter response to notice from Cats of Penang in reply to their letter and public post.

We wish to focus on animals thank you...

We would like to clarify a recent incident involving one of the long-term feeders in Gelugor and Cats of Penang attempting to trap and neuter cats in the area.

SAMA is not responsible for how individual feeders act and we do not encourage confrontation, nor the escalation of it such as involving the police. However, we understand the distress that led to this response.

The feeder in question has been caring for cats in this area for many years and knows them well. She had clearly expressed that she preferred to manage neutering through SAMA, as she trusts our approach and the best practices we follow. She also made it known that she believed the cats were not yet fit for neutering.

Despite this, her request was disregarded, and they still came to take the cats and dismissed her concerns for them. This understandably caused her great distress.

It was also brought to our attention that the cats were kept in carriers, which is not appropriate for holding cats pre-surgery. The feeder had to step in and advise on proper handling, as it was evident the individuals involved were not experienced in cat trapping or care.

We hope that communication and respect for local feeders — especially those with long-term knowledge of specific cat colonies — will be prioritised in the future. This helps avoid unnecessary distress and protects the wellbeing of the animals we all aim to help..
