Most people think deep litter just means throwing bedding on the floor and leaving it there.

That is why their coop starts to smell.

In this blog post, I explain what beginners actually need to do to make deep litter work properly, including bedding depth, moisture, EM use, odour control, and when the litter is ready to move into compost.

If you want a chicken coop that is cleaner, more manageable, and more practical in Malaysian conditions, read this first.

We use the deep litter method for one main reason: a dry coop floor is easier to manage. When the floor stays dry, the coop is less likely to smell sharply, less likely to attract flies, and generally more stable over time. That is the real purpose of deep litter. It is not about ignoring manure, an...

Why does a chicken coop smell after rain? Simple: rain exposes a weak chicken coop system.

A smelly coop is usually not an “Ayam Issue.” It is a moisture issue.

When rainwater splashes in, birds track wet feet onto the litter, leaks drip into the coop, and humidity slows drying, the bedding turns wet, packed, and anaerobic. That is when the smell starts.

In tropical Malaysia, good chicken keeping is not just about having a pretty chicken coop. It is about dry litter, airflow, rain protection, and proper coop design. If your backyard chicken coop smells after rain, the answer is usually not perfume, disinfectant, or magic powder. The answer is to fix the moisture, restore airflow, and keep the litter alive.

No one wants a coop that smells like regret after one thunderstorm. 😅
Dryness first. Always.

Thinking of raising chickens? Read this first. 🐔✨

Most people think the first step is buying birds. It usually isn’t.

The biggest mistakes happen before the chickens arrive:

1. Buying birds before the coop and setup are ready
2. Choosing chickens for looks instead of purpose
3. Underestimating the daily routine of feeding, water, egg collection, cleaning, and protection

In tropical Malaysia, backyard chicken keeping is not just about having a cute coop or beautiful birds. A good chicken setup needs planning, airflow, dry ground, shade, routine, and the right breed for your goal.

If you want fresh eggs, healthy hens, and a cleaner, easier system, start with the setup first. Build with purpose. Choose with purpose. Manage with purpose. 🌿🥚

Cute chickens are nice.
Pretty coops are nice.
But a working system is nicer. 😉

Heritage Rhode Island Red hens in motion. Scratching, foraging, and working the ground the way a proper farm chicken should. At Grove Homestead, we appreciate Rhode Island Red heritage hens not only for their appearance, but for their role as a dependable dual-purpose breed suited for both egg production and practical farm life.

In a time when many people are looking into backyard chickens, heritage poultry, and more resilient food systems, breeds like the Rhode Island Red still matter. A good hen is not just red in colour. She should have strength, activity, foraging instinct, and the kind of presence that reflects function as much as form.

This is part of what we continue to observe and build here, chickens that fit into a real homestead, not just a photo.

If you keep chickens in a tropical climate, broodiness needs to be handled with a bit more care. A broody hen already runs hotter than usual. She wants to sit still, stay tucked into a nest, and barely move. In a cooler climate, that is one thing. In a hot, humid place like Malaysia, it can become a...

Master the Art of Heritage Poultry: Your Essential Space & Breeding Guide 🐣✨

Success with heritage breeds isn't just about luck, it’s about respecting the "Geometry of the Flock." Whether you are managing a backyard coop or a professional pasture-raised system, getting your ratios and environments right is the difference between a struggling farm and a thriving homestead.

We’ve condensed years of breeding expertise into this definitive guide for our fellow poultry enthusiasts.

📍 Part 1: Space is Vital
Overcrowding is the #1 cause of stress and disease.

Standard Coops: Aim for 4-5 sq ft indoors and 10 sq ft in the run.

Mobile Tractors: Perfect for daily rotation at 1.5-2 sq ft per bird.

The Gold Standard: Rotational Day-Paddocks (50-108 sq ft per bird) for high-welfare foraging and lush pastures.

⏳ Part 2: Timing the Equatorial Cycle
In our climate, timing is everything. Avoid breeding during monsoons or extreme heat. Target those transitional dryer periods for optimum fertility and chick vigor.

💡 Part 3: The Secret to High Hatch Rates
The 1:8 Ratio: One rooster for every 8–10 hens ensures peak fertility without over-mating.

The 7-Day Rule: Fresh is best! Don’t incubate eggs older than a week.

Nutrition First: Switch to high-vitamin breeder rations 2 weeks before collecting eggs.

Precision in the details leads to excellence in the hatch.

Are you buying a real Rhode Island Red, or an industrial impostor? The biggest lie in the poultry market today is that one bird can do it all.

If you are looking into buying baby chicks this season, you need to see this infographic first. There is a massive "Identity Crisis" happening with one of America's most beloved breeds: The Rhode Island Red.

Many buyers are promised a chicken that has huge size, dark exhibition color, AND lays 300+ eggs a year. But biologically, this is impossible due to the "Triangle of Trade-offs". A chicken has finite energy; it can either build a massive muscle frame (Heritage) or focus on rapid ovulation (Production). It cannot maximize both.

Before you bring chicks home to your homestead or backyard coop, know the difference:

🔴 TYPE A: The Heritage RIR (The Standard) This is the true 19th-century lineage bird.

Look for: A "Brick Body Shape" (long and deep) and rich, "Dark Mahogany" feathers with a green sheen.

Purpose: A true dual-purpose bird for both quality meat and moderate eggs (~200–250/year).

The Reality: They grow slower because they are building bone and muscle density.

🟠 TYPE B: The Production RIR (The Hybrid) Often marketed deceptively as "Pure RIR," these are usually crossed with White Leghorns for efficiency.

Look for: A narrow "V-Shape" body, "Light Orange/Red" feathers, and a high tail angle.

Purpose: Eggs only. They lay incredibly fast (280–320+ eggs) but "burn out" faster.

Don't fall for the "Pure Breed Seller Fallacy." Just because someone hatches two Heritage birds doesn't make them a breeder; it makes them a multiplier if they aren't selecting for the standard.

Save this "Summary Cheat Sheet" infographic so you know exactly what you are looking for when choosing between heritage breed chickens and commercial hybrids!
