The Potting Soil Mistake Almost Everyone Makes (Including Me).

When I first started growing vegetables in containers, I thought soil was simple.
Brown. Soft. Holds the plant upright. Done.

So I grabbed a few bags of “potting soil,” filled my pots, planted my seedlings… and waited.

The plants didn’t die.
They just stalled. Leaves stayed small. Growth felt slow and stubborn. No matter how much sunlight or watering I gave, something felt off.

That’s when I learned the truth most beginners aren’t told:

In container gardening, potting soil is the system.
You don’t have earthworms fixing mistakes.
You don’t have deep soil layers buffering errors.

There are many potting soil brands out there. But not all would be able to disclose the pH range. If your plants are not doing well lately after topping up with some potting soil, the reason could be due to high 'acidic' level. The ideal pH range for potting soil is between 6 to 7 so anything below that could cause nutrients deficiencies for plants - which may eventually result in death.

Tips when buying potting soil for your plants:

1. Buy soil from trusted source.
2. Buy one potting soil bag first and check pH level before you decide to buy more.
3. Stick to the same brand or supplier once you are comfortable with the quality.
