So proud and heartwarming to see our outreach programme taking shape through young students proudly wearing the HASS tee bearing our mantra “Voice for the Voiceless.”

This is classroom without walls. This is bigger than animal welfare. It is about shaping young minds to lead with empathy, kindness, responsibility and learning how to become better human beings. Real education goes beyond classrooms. Compassion must be experienced, lived, practised.

BIS x HASS
ECA Field Trip
12 May 2026

54 Borneo International School students enrolled in HASS Animal Welfare Extra-Curricular activity program visited BarkPark HASS Kennels today for an educational field trip focused on animal welfare, empathy and safe interaction with rescue dogs.

The educational session was led by HASS Volunteer Team Leaders Wayne, formerly attached to the Singapore SPCA, and his wife Darilyn, who conducted a safety and behavioural briefing for the 54 students and accompanying teachers before entry into the park.

Students gathered at the entrance where the briefing focused on understanding dog behaviour, removing fear and learning calm, respectful interaction with animals.

Wayne and Darilyn explained that barking at the gates often reflects excitement and curiosity rather than aggression, helping students better interpret canine behaviour instead of reacting with fear.

Using Tyson, a previously darted rescue, for demonstration, students were taught how to safely approach dogs - by offering the dogs to sniff their knuckles first and not extend their fingers at them - before gentle petting. Emphasis was placed on maintaining a calm demeanour, no running and shouting to prevent the rescue dogs from becoming reactive when overstimulated.

The visit forms part of HASS’s broader educational outreach efforts which go beyond rescue work into shaping empathy, emotional intelligence and responsible animal interaction among young people.

The dogs at HASSCare Kennels come from difficult backgrounds involving neglect, abuse, abandonment or trauma, making calm and positive human engagement an important part of their rehabilitation journey establishing synergy between humans and animals.

Students were then allowed to roam the grounds, interact gently with the dogs and experience some much-needed pet therapy ahead of their examinations next week.

At HASS, animal welfare is not merely about fostering and rehabilitating animals - it is about better understanding, compassion and building a kinder society through education and actual interaction at these educational field trips.

No grandstanding - just kind souls dropping by bearing gifts of love - fresh liver, giant bones and even a wheelchair for our littlest special.

Today was especially meaningful for Bodhi - our temple rescue who was cruelly maimed before rescuer Greg stepped in to save him. Donor Christopher and his lovely mum arrived with the gift of a wheelchair and even assembled the fit out. Bodhi gets a chance to move with a little more freedom replacing one that he has outgrown.

The liver and bones will nourish many rescued bellies this week.Sometimes humanity is not found in loud declarations.
It is found quietly… in people who simply shows up with care. 🙏🏼 Thank you 🐶🐾🐕🙏🏼

🐶🐕After the long rehabilitation journey with Gabby, the next mission begins.

🐶Snowy, the Hui Sing roundabout pup and 🐕‍🦺OO, the fierce black community dog who mutilated her own tail from trauma and distress, are both now under our care.

Snowy has completed her overnight health scan check. She’s a darling and very manja - warms up to humans quickly.

While OO has endured 32 days of surgery, treatment and recovery under the watchful care of our panel vet, ACV. She is still fearful - read quite fierce - except with one staff who has been visiting her with liver broth and supplements.

🛎️ And now comes the harder part. Rehabilitation. Trust-building. Socialisation. Not just teaching them to coexist with other dogs and humans but convincing them that hands can be gentle. That food will come.

🩸This stage takes immense patience from carers. Quiet persistence, endurance and bravery too. Especially with dogs whose survival instincts have been sharpened by fear and hardship.

🐕‍🦺 People often celebrate the rescue moment. But the long haul real work begins thereafter.

🐾 🙏🏼We now call upon the dog community who’s been following our work and knows our hearts to stand with us not just during fair weather of successful rescues but the stormy sea of medical bills. Every contribution counts. Every volunteer makes a difference. Every food aid feeds.

THANK YOU ALL 🙏🏼❤️🐾

🐕‍🦺O-O The Black-Black Tailless🐕‍🦺

🐾🐾 On 5 April, O-O had to be rescued from herself. In pain, traumatised and desperate, she had self-mutilated her entire tail, leaving behind only a gaping wound dangerously close to her a**s.

🙏🏼Joyce, HASS Committee Member and Head Rescue Advisor, geared up immediately to capture her and rush her to ACV, our trusted panel vet. Since then, OO has been under intensive treatment for over a month.

It has been a heartbreaking journey. Because of where the wound is located, every bowel movement stretches the stitches. Every time she poos, she cries. Stool softeners had to be prescribed just so she could perform the most basic function with less pain.she had to be re-stitched a couple of times to hold her flesh together💔

She is barely a year old. A baby herself who already had a litter, survived a harsh street life and depended entirely on neighbourhood feeders just to stay alive. And despite over a month of care, she remains traumatised and untouchable. Yet, just look at those eyes👀 yearning to be loved❤️🥲

Tomorrow, OO will finally be discharged. Her wound is still not fully sealed and we will assist to foster her until her wound heals completely. Thankfully, a neighbour who has been feeding OO has now stepped up to adopt her when she is better.

But the medical bills have climbed relentlessly and hit the roof.

We are appealing to the dog community and kind-hearted supporters to help us carry OO through the final stretch of her recovery. Cases like this are emotionally and financially crushing, but we could not turn away from her suffering.

As many of you know, HASS operates without government grants or corporate funding. We survive entirely on public kindness, food aid and donations from ordinary people who care deeply about animals especially for cases like OO.

🙏🏼🙏🏼 Please help us give this poor girl the chance to heal properly, safely and with dignity❤️ And we must thank Andra Chong, a kind neighbour, for drawing attention to OO’s tragedy and shoutout for help. OO’s case is a tragedy no animal should ever have to live through. 💔🐾🐕‍🦺

🐕SNOWY. Still a little unsure, still learning that hands can be kind. Trust doesn’t return overnight — it’s rebuilt quietly, gently, on her terms.

We’ve walked this path many times. It’s second nature now to slow down, to read the silence, to allow her space, to slowly earn her trust.

Every happy dog you see here once stood where Snowy stands today — frightened, withdrawn, some untouchable for weeks.

And then there was Gabby — the one who broke us when we saw her state and how we rejoice seeing her today.

So with Snowy, we know… she will come around. Like all things in life, particularly with dogs as with all animals, we need time. Time always heal🙏🏼❤️

Snowy’s story began stranded at Hui Sing roundabout - another small life - suspected abandoned.

Thanks to kind hands that stepped in, she was safely rescued and brought to Animal Care Veterinary Clinic for a full check and overnight monitoring.

Today, she’s with us at BarkPark HASS Kennels — safe, warm, no longer alone. She’s still tentative and scared.

Now begins the quiet work: healing, rebuilding trust and preparing her to step into the new life that awaits.
