Sunday Art day: Harrison Sophiist Mchoma

I am Harrison H Mchoma (Sophiist Alos) Sophiist Alos. Born (1999) and raised in Blantyre. I fell in love with photography in 2015. But as time went by, I started to meet new people with different ideas about photography; “You can not make it in life with photography”, “what if market crushes?” and “how far will you go with this?

Still I perused my dream and in 202I got my first part time job as a photographer. In the past years I taught myself to the extent that people started seeing the photographical fruits in me. All I know I shared with other kids who were in same situation like me, a Christian thing to do.

Nature Saturday: Lake Malawi National Park

Lake Malawi National Park is a 29.600 km2 national park at the southern end of Lake Malawi in Malawi. It is the only national park in Malawi that was created with the purpose of protecting fish and aquatic habitats. Lake Malawi National Park includes a fair amount of land, including a headland, the foreshore and several small rocky islands in Lake Malawi.

The Lake Malawi National Park incorporates the beautiful Cape Maclear, a World Heritage Site. The park lies in the south of the country, and is the world’s first freshwater park. It includes the land area around the cape and bay, as well as the Lake and islands as far as 100 metres offshore. Lake Malawi is the number 2 deepst lake in Africa and number 6 deepest lake in the world (2316 feet or 706 meter).

These waters are an absolute delight for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts. There is also boating and canoeing on offer. There are 600 species of the colourful Malawi Cichlids, which are endemic here. This diversity of freshwater fish is unequalled in the entire world. The abundant freshwater fish will feed directly from your hand while snorkelling in Lake Malawi.

In the surrounding areas, various animals and birds can be found, including Baboons, antelope, Hyrax, Fish eagles, Hamerkops and Cormorants. There are a number of excellent places to stay, all of which offer many exciting activities. There are even some beautiful romantic island hideaways.

As we mark 20 years of World Ranger Day, this year’s theme, “Rangers: Guardians of a Changing Planet,” recognises the vital role rangers play in responding to climate change, biodiversity loss, and growing environmental challenges.

We remember those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and stand with every ranger working tirelessly to protect the future of our planet. Thank you for your dedication, resilience, and service.

Ng’ona Lodge: oasis in the African bush

The lodge is situated in a tranquil environment on the banks of the Shire River which flows out of Lake Malawi, south to join the Zambezi River in Mozambique.

The lodge is approximately 70 kilometres south west of Blantyre.

They offer 4 chalets and 2 double river view air conditioner rooms with shower/toilet, tea & coffee facilities, mosquito net, 2 powerful standing (moveable) fans and a big shady veranda. Campsites are available with built braai/grill. Campers are welcome to bring their own food and cook on the braai’s. Toilet/shower facilities are in the main building.
Have a swim or enjoy the abundant birdlife and the next by Majete Game Reserve.

Sunday Art day: Emmanuel Phale

Emmanuel Phale Emmanuel Phale is a visual artist based in Lilongwe Malawi. I am a self-taught artist and he has improved his art career through reading books. I started drawing at a very young age which can be dated to around 2005 when I was in primary school. Since then I have been researching on the best way I can express myself through art and the best medium I can use.

After learning from other artists, I was able to start using charcoal as the best medium for me. In July 2021 I attended the art in the park art showcase and exhibit. It was my first time to do an exhibition which opened my eyes to how I can work to create the best out of myself. I have attended a few on-line exhibits like the Incredible Talents Competition and exhibit where I have learnt a lot in art.

My ambition is to become a world class charcoal pencils artist and help influence art recognition in Malawi and across the globe. I want to be able to be one of the supplier of art materials as it is hard to purchase art supplies here in Malawi. At the same time help to get investors from within and outside Malawi to buy art from local artists as it is hard to sell artworks in the country.

My wish is that one day I can be able to achieve these goals and I urge sponsors to help in building the art industry in the country.

Nature Saturday: Wild dogs sighting in Kasungu National Park!

Four African wild dogs have been sighted in Malawi’s Kasungu National Park, marking the first confirmed presence of the endangered species in the park in more than a decade. The animals are believed to have travelled hundreds of kilometres from eastern Zambia to reach Kasungu.

Their remarkable journey may have taken them through parts of the Malawi–Zambia Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), which links Kasungu National Park with Zambia’s Lukusuzi National Park and the adjoining Luangwa Valley. The corridor passes through a long, narrow landscape of densely populated villages, farms and homesteads, making the journey even more extraordinary.

In 2022, the Government of Malawi, IFAW and African Parks reintroduced hundreds of animals to Kasungu, including impalas, warthogs and elephants and Impalas, one of the African wild dog’s preferred prey species are now thriving in the southern part of the park, not far from where the dogs were recently spotted.

The natural return of African wild dogs to Kasungu National Park is more than an exciting wildlife sighting. It is a powerful sign that the park’s ecosystem is recovering and that conservation efforts are helping restore a healthy, functioning landscape.

Best food and drinks in town!

La Cantina La Cantina in Lilongwe is Malawi’s first and only restaurant dedicated to traditional Mexican food and drinks. They use fresh, local ingredients whenever possible and bring a uniquely Oaxacan flare to every meal.

Their bar serves craft margaritas and great cocktails by an outdoor fire pit! They created a beautiful atmosphere with delicious food and fantastic drinks. Sit outside chatting and then move inside for a laid-back dinner of Malawian style Mexican food. Among many delicious Mexican dishes, they serve tasty taquitos, beans, salsas, chicken mole, steak and shrimp tacos, but really you can’t go wrong. They are the spot for a date, a laid back work dinner, or just hanging out with friends and family. Great ambience, friendly service, amazing food, good size portions, vegetarian options, and atmospheric Latin music. A little bit of Mexico in Malawi.
