An ode to my sugar cane stray ๐Ÿ˜

This girlie must be around 10 years old and what a loyal little thing she is. From the first few months of being incredibly shy, she now talks with excitement when we come to walk with her on the weekends and she always accompanies my dogs, my mum and myself. She does take my beagle walkabout and hunting ๐Ÿซฃ but she is fiercely protective of us. My heart is so full when her little face appears and lights up when she sees us, and her little squeaks are the cutest! I promise to try capture this on video next time ๐Ÿ˜

Reflections from the top of Table Mountain โ›ฐ๏ธ

(Photo from 2 weeks ago ๐Ÿ˜‰ I am back home safe!)

What an epic adventure the last few weeks were, and post trail I got to spend time in Cape Town, where i got to meet one of my friends who I have known since primary school and I made some new friends and that was really so awesome! ๐Ÿคฉ

Of course, having completed another ultra-trail, I search once more for another challenge and I think I have one in mind that I would like to tackle - but this would not be for the next 18 months at least. Suggestions most welcome for epic races 70-100km ๐Ÿ˜‰ For now: July Mauritius semi marathon, September Warsaw marathon ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ

The challenges of the UTD were quite unexpected as I thought I would struggle with different issues, but actually the one thing I hadnโ€™t really thought about how digestion can be heavily affected by low temperatures. I had trained plenty with gels and carb drinks and no issues whatsoever but those were my โ€œhomeโ€ conditions and here I was playing away. A great learning experience as I discovered more about what my body needs in terms of fueling in colder temperatures. I listened to my gut (quite literally) and changed my nutrition mid race from gels and sugar to savoury food, mainly potatoes, when I finally felt like I was able to eat. Very interesting and a lesson to keep in mind for โ€œnext timeโ€ ๐Ÿค”

For now, its back to work and its already been a super busy couple of days but all good and I am ready to get all my furry patients checked up and good and healthy ๐Ÿ’ช

Giants Cup Uncut 65 ๐Ÿ†

There were many unknowns going into this race - how the body would deal with the travelling, the altitude, the cold, the lack of sleep. Itโ€™s times like this that you have to just believe it will all be OK.

It kicked off with a very early start and big detour to the start line. It was 6 deg so I was well layered up, had gloves, ear warmers, a buff - extras that I am not using to wearing ๐Ÿซฃ the first few kms were hard going, i wanted to go out slow and build up the pace. The first climb appeared very quickly which caused significant contractions in the calves. At the first descent, the track became more runnable and it was easier to stretch the legs. The sun coming up over the mountain range was absolutely beautiful to see.

The first aid station Swaiman Hut 14.2km and up to this point I felt good and my pace suggested a sub-10 hour finish. So up the second climb we went! All felt great until km 25, cramps started creeping in.. luckily another runner helped me with some salt tablets and those subsided quickly. However i was quickly hit with digestive issues and my pace dropped right off as i couldnโ€™t even run. The next aid station Castleburn was a few kmโ€™s and a small climb away. I filled up my water there but could not consume any food/gel, and it wasnt until km 35 that I was able to move comfortably again. A big push on the uphill allowed me to overtake quite a few runners. Km 39 was the next aid station, where I caught up with the runner that helped me and we agreed to go on together. At this point i managed to eat a few potatoes and fruit puree. We worked hard together to get to Cobham aid station km 48 where his wife helped us and we set off to tackle the last 14 km. I was able to push hard on the uphill and he was able to get me going on the downhills. We started to aim for 10h30 finish time. However we soon hit the last 6km which caught us completely off-guard - super technical downhill, so this slowed me right down. I ended up with a 10h58 time and I am so proud of my effort and the race I ran. It was such a beautiful place and such a beautiful experience ๐Ÿ’š
