Giants Cup Uncut 65 ๐
There were many unknowns going into this race - how the body would deal with the travelling, the altitude, the cold, the lack of sleep. Itโs times like this that you have to just believe it will all be OK.
It kicked off with a very early start and big detour to the start line. It was 6 deg so I was well layered up, had gloves, ear warmers, a buff - extras that I am not using to wearing ๐ซฃ the first few kms were hard going, i wanted to go out slow and build up the pace. The first climb appeared very quickly which caused significant contractions in the calves. At the first descent, the track became more runnable and it was easier to stretch the legs. The sun coming up over the mountain range was absolutely beautiful to see.
The first aid station Swaiman Hut 14.2km and up to this point I felt good and my pace suggested a sub-10 hour finish. So up the second climb we went! All felt great until km 25, cramps started creeping in.. luckily another runner helped me with some salt tablets and those subsided quickly. However i was quickly hit with digestive issues and my pace dropped right off as i couldnโt even run. The next aid station Castleburn was a few kmโs and a small climb away. I filled up my water there but could not consume any food/gel, and it wasnt until km 35 that I was able to move comfortably again. A big push on the uphill allowed me to overtake quite a few runners. Km 39 was the next aid station, where I caught up with the runner that helped me and we agreed to go on together. At this point i managed to eat a few potatoes and fruit puree. We worked hard together to get to Cobham aid station km 48 where his wife helped us and we set off to tackle the last 14 km. I was able to push hard on the uphill and he was able to get me going on the downhills. We started to aim for 10h30 finish time. However we soon hit the last 6km which caught us completely off-guard - super technical downhill, so this slowed me right down. I ended up with a 10h58 time and I am so proud of my effort and the race I ran. It was such a beautiful place and such a beautiful experience ๐
Thank you Drakensberg ๐ซถ
