Meet Bailey 🐶

Bailey came to our clinic as an emergency after a traumatic accident caused his eye to prolapse — a serious and painful condition where the eye slips out of its socket.

Our team acted quickly and performed an emergency eye prolapse surgery, gently repositioning the eye and placing temporary stitches to keep it protected while healing.

Thanks to fast intervention and lots of TLC, Bailey's recovery went beautifully. After a week with the sutures in place, we're thrilled to say we were able to save his eye — and his vision!

We're so proud of brave little Bailey and grateful to be part of his healing journey. 💙🐾

🦴🐾 Meet Cefalu, a 77 kg Italian Mastiff!
This gentle giant came in for a consultation due to lameness in one of his legs.

👉 Did you know? Lameness in large breed dogs can often be a sign of joint issues like hip dysplasia or cruciate ligament injuries. Early diagnosis is key to preventing long-term damage and ensuring quality of life.

📍 If your big dog shows signs of limping, stiffness, or reluctance to move, don’t wait—schedule a check-up with us!

Did you know a cardiac ultrasound could save your pet’s life? ❤️

An echocardiogram (heart ultrasound) is a vital tool to diagnose heart conditions in dogs and cats. It is recommended when:

✅ A heart murmur is detected during a check-up
✅ Persistent coughing or breathing difficulty
✅ Fatigue or fainting episodes
✅ Before major surgeries (like spaying/neutering in at-risk breeds)
✅ Routine screening in genetically predisposed breeds

🔔 Breeds with higher risk of heart disease:

🐶 Dogs:

- Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (mitral valve disease)
- Doberman (dilated cardiomyopathy)
- Boxer (arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy)
- Chihuahua, Poodle, Yorkshire Terrier (valvular issues)
- French Bulldogs, Pugs, and English Bulldogs.

🐱 Cats:

- Maine C**n, Ragdoll, Sphynx (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy)

If your pet shows any signs or belongs to one of these breeds, book an appointment with us. Early diagnosis can make all the difference!

🐶💉 Today we had the pleasure of seeing Rosie and Daisy for their Leishmania vaccination! 🌟

Leishmaniasis is a serious disease transmitted by a tiny insect similar to a mosquito called the phlebotomine sandfly. In Malta, due to our warm climate, the number of cases is particularly high, making prevention extremely important for our furry friends. 🦟☀️

Thankfully, there is a vaccine available that helps reduce the risk of developing the disease. It doesn't replace other protective measures, but it's an important part of a complete prevention plan.

🔬 Important to know:
Before your dog can receive the first dose, we must run a blood test to confirm they are negative for Leishmania. The vaccine is only safe and effective in dogs who have not already been exposed.

🐾 Rosie and Daisy were both tested today — happily, they were negative and ready for their first vaccine! Great job, girls! 💚

✅ Helpful tips to protect your dog from Leishmania in Malta:

Use vet-recommended repellents like collars or spot-on treatments that protect against sandflies.

Keep your dog’s environment clean and avoid areas with lots of vegetation or standing water.

📅 If your dog hasn’t been tested or vaccinated yet, now is the perfect time to talk to your vet about Leishmania prevention. Protecting them today could save their life tomorrow!

🌞 Dear pet owners – Summer is here in Malta, and high temperatures can be extremely dangerous for our furry friends. 🌡️🐾
We are seeing a concerning rise in heat stroke cases in dogs at the clinic. This is a life-threatening emergency that requires immediate action!

🔍 Main signs of heat stroke in dogs:

- Excessive panting and difficulty breathing
- Excessive drooling
- Weakness, unsteadiness or collapse
- Bright red, very pale white or blue gums
- Vomiting or diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
- Body temperature over 40°C
- Seizures or unconsciousness

🚨 What to do if you suspect heat stroke:

1. Move your dog to a shaded, cool area immediately.
2. Wet their body with cool (not cold) water – especially under the armpits, groin, and paws.
3. Offer fresh water, but don’t force them to drink!
4. Contact your vet or come to the clinic right away. Every minute counts!

✅ Tips to prevent heat stroke:

- Avoid walks between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM – stick to early mornings or late evenings.
- Never leave your dog in the car, on rooftops or balconies or directly in the sun, even for a “few minutes”.
- Always provide access to fresh water and shade.
- Avoid intense exercise on hot days.
- Be extra cautious with brachycephalic breeds (e.g., Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzu, Pekignese, etc), dogs with thick fur (e.g., German Shepards, Chow Chow, Samoyed, Border Collie, etc), puppies, senior dogs, and overweight pets as they are more susceptible to heat strokes!

💚 This summer, let’s protect those who can’t tell us they’re too hot. Heat stroke is preventable – and prevention can save lives.

📞 If you’re unsure or need help, please call us or visit the clinic.

Thank you to everyone who called or messaged us about Dolce. We are happy to announce that Dolce has found a very loving home and we could not be happier for him. We received an overwhelming response to our post, 38 people wanted to adopt him within the first 24 hours of posting! Dolce is one of the lucky ones as he happens to be of an unusual and desirable breed. Many others, just as sweet as him, end up spending their lives in a sanctuary or on the street. If all cats received the same attention as Dolce did, we would not have so many cats in our sanctuaries or suffering on the streets. Thank you once again to everyone willing to open up their homes to him and to those who shared our post!

At our veterinary clinic, every appointment matters—because behind each one is a pet who needs care and a family who loves them.

To help us provide the best possible service to pets in need, we kindly ask that any cancellations be made at least 24 hours in advance. This allows us to offer those time slots to other animals who may require urgent attention.

Late cancellations or missed appointments make it harder for us to accommodate all our patients, especially those with pressing medical needs. For this reason, we’ve implemented a cancellation fee for appointments canceled with less than 24 hours' notice.

We truly appreciate your understanding and support as we work to prioritize care for those who need it most. Thank you for being a valued part of our clinic family! 🐶🐱💙

Our Story

Pets & Vets Veterinary Clinic was opened in November 2014 by our head vet Dr. Victoria Bondin. She graduated 10 years ago and is our main surgeon and has a special interest in soft tissue surgery, as well as a soft spot for stray and abandoned animals. Dr. Helen Mower who has 7 years of experience joined the team in July 2016 and has a special interest in anesthesia, internal medicine as well as Ultrasonography. Dr. Francesca Falcioni who is our junior vet joined the team in January 2019 after being an intern with our clinic through an Erasmus project in the summer of 2018.

We also have 2 vet nurses who graduated through MCAST, Matthew and Claudia. They joined the team in November 2015 and April 2016 respectively. Our nurses take care of our hospitalised patients, patients that are going to surgery and help to educate our clients and interns. Our receptionist Nicolette is in charge of the front of house of the clinic and is the first person that meets and greets our clients. She started working with us from December 2018.

As a clinic we aim to provide the best veterinary care for your pets. We have a vast array of diagnostic equipment at our clinic, starting from blood machines, x-ray and ultrasound. Our surgery is well equipped with monitors and gaseous anesthesia.
