🎄🐶 Toxic Christmas Foods for Dogs 🐶🎄

The holidays are full of delicious treats, but some Christmas favorites can be very dangerous for our furry friends! 🚫🐾
Here are some festive foods your dog should never eat:

🍫 Chocolate – Contains theobromine, which dogs can’t process and can cause serious poisoning.
🍰 Christmas cake / fruitcake – Often made with raisins, currants, or alcohol, all of which can harm your dog’s kidneys and stomach.
🍷 Alcohol – Even tiny amounts can affect a dog’s nervous system and lead to severe health problems.
🧀 Blue cheese – Contains roquefortine C, a toxin that dogs are highly sensitive to.
🍖 Cooked bones – They can splinter, causing choking or dangerous internal injuries.
🧅🧄 Onions, leeks, garlic, chives & shallots – These ingredients can damage red blood cells and cause anemia.
🥜 Macadamia nuts – Even a few can cause weakness, tremors, vomiting, and distress.

Keep these festive foods out of reach so your pup can enjoy a safe and happy Christmas! 🎅🐕❤️✨

✨ Did you know that a rabbit’s teeth never stop growing? 🐰🦷

Because of this, one of the most common issues in rabbits is dental malocclusion—a condition where the teeth don’t align properly and begin to grow uncontrollably.

When this happens, rabbits may experience pain, stop eating, drool, or even develop wounds inside the mouth. That’s why it’s essential to visit a veterinarian as soon as you notice any changes in appetite or behavior.

In this case, we performed a tooth trimming and leveling procedure, which helps restore normal mouth function. However, when malocclusion is recurrent, the most effective long-term solution is often the complete extraction of the incisors, preventing the issue from returning.

🌿 Fun fact: A rabbit’s teeth can grow 2–3 mm per week! This is why a diet rich in hay and regular veterinary check-ups are so important.

👉 If you notice dental issues, unusual behavior, or have any concerns about your rabbit’s health, schedule an appointment with us — we’re here to help!

Bezoars in Rabbits 🐰

Suzie had diarrhea, which was treated with medication, but soon stopped eating and passing feaces. After only one day of not defecating, she was brought in for evaluation. Radiographs revealed a stomach full of food and gas, suggesting gastrointestinal hypomotility with an obstruction. Surgery uncovered a compacted mass of food and hair (bezoar), which was successfully removed.

🔎 Why it matters
Rabbits should never go more than 12–24 hours without eating or defecating — it can quickly become life-threatening.

✅ Tips for owners

- Monitor appetite and stool daily
- Provide unlimited hay and fresh greens
- Brush regularly, especially during molting
- Seek veterinary care immediately if eating or defecation decreases

Suzie’s case shows how early action can save a rabbit’s life — and thanks to her owner’s quick response and close attention, she received the care she needed in time 🐇

Feeding tubes in Cats 🐱

After a complicated surgery to remove a bile duct stone as can be seen in the ultrasound picture (Yellow), Kiki was not eating on her own. To ensure proper nutrition and support recovery, a feeding tube was placed.

💡 Assisted feeding is essential in cats who:

- Are weak or in pain after surgery.
- Refuse to eat due to illness or anorexia.
- Need nutritional support to recover from surgeries or complex procedures.

Thanks to assisted feeding with a feeding tube, our patients can receive the nutrients needed while recovering, improving their overall prognosis. Nutrition is key in feline recovery. 💛

Meet Bailey 🐶

Bailey came to our clinic as an emergency after a traumatic accident caused his eye to prolapse — a serious and painful condition where the eye slips out of its socket.

Our team acted quickly and performed an emergency eye prolapse surgery, gently repositioning the eye and placing temporary stitches to keep it protected while healing.

Thanks to fast intervention and lots of TLC, Bailey's recovery went beautifully. After a week with the sutures in place, we're thrilled to say we were able to save his eye — and his vision!

We're so proud of brave little Bailey and grateful to be part of his healing journey. 💙🐾

Our Story

Pets & Vets Veterinary Clinic was opened in November 2014 by our head vet Dr. Victoria Bondin. She graduated 10 years ago and is our main surgeon and has a special interest in soft tissue surgery, as well as a soft spot for stray and abandoned animals. Dr. Helen Mower who has 7 years of experience joined the team in July 2016 and has a special interest in anesthesia, internal medicine as well as Ultrasonography. Dr. Francesca Falcioni who is our junior vet joined the team in January 2019 after being an intern with our clinic through an Erasmus project in the summer of 2018.

We also have 2 vet nurses who graduated through MCAST, Matthew and Claudia. They joined the team in November 2015 and April 2016 respectively. Our nurses take care of our hospitalised patients, patients that are going to surgery and help to educate our clients and interns. Our receptionist Nicolette is in charge of the front of house of the clinic and is the first person that meets and greets our clients. She started working with us from December 2018.

As a clinic we aim to provide the best veterinary care for your pets. We have a vast array of diagnostic equipment at our clinic, starting from blood machines, x-ray and ultrasound. Our surgery is well equipped with monitors and gaseous anesthesia.
