Myles' Story: The Importance of Early Detection and Monitoring 🐶

Myles was diagnosed with a ureteral stone several months after starting treatment with Allopurinol for sandfly disease. While this is an uncommon complication, it is a known risk, which is why regular monitoring is so important during treatment.

Fortunately, Myles's owner is extremely dedicated and would bring him for regular check-ups, blood tests, and urine monitoring throughout his treatment. During a follow-up ultrasound, abnormalities were detected in his right kidney and ureter (the structure that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder). The ultrasound revealed dilation of the kidney and ureter, as well as a 5 mm ureteral stone causing an obstruction.

Myles underwent emergency surgery to remove the stone successfully from his ureter. Following surgery, his treatment protocol was adjusted and he continued with close monitoring. We are happy to report that just 7 days later, both his right kidney and ureter had returned to normal.

This case highlights why testing for sandfly-borne diseases and starting treatment early is so important, but also why ongoing monitoring cannot be overlooked. Regular follow-up examinations allow us to identify potential complications quickly and act before they become more serious.

We are very grateful to Myles' owner for being so committed to his health and wellbeing. 💚

🐾 Clinical Case: 🌾🌾

Douglas came into our clinic with persistent sneezing and discomfort. After a thorough examination, we discovered the cause: a foxtail grass seed lodged deep inside his nasal passage 🌾

Foxtail seeds are especially common during this season and can easily attach to your pet’s fur. Due to their shape, they can migrate into delicate areas such as:
👃 Nose
👂 Ears
🐾 Between the toes
👁️ Eyes

In Douglas’ case, the seed had traveled too far inside the nose to be safely removed with basic tools. We used our endoscope, which allows us to see inside the nasal cavity and remove foreign objects in a precise and minimally invasive way. The procedure was successful, and Douglas is now breathing comfortably again 💙

⚠️ Pet owner tip:
During this time of year, always check your pets after walks, especially if they’ve been around dry grass. Watch for signs like excessive sneezing, head shaking, or sudden discomfort.

Early intervention is key to preventing serious complications.
At our clinic, we’re equipped with advanced tools to provide the best care possible for your pets.

🌾 Grass Seed (Ħafura) Season is Here! 🐶

We’re entering the time of year when foxtails grass are everywhere, parks, fields, roadsides, and areas with dry grass. Because of their sharp, barbed shape, they can easily attach to your dog’s fur and pe*****te the body.

⚠️ Where do they commonly get stuck?

- Nose 👃
- Ears 👂
- Between the toes 🐾
- Eyes 👁️
- Skin (especially areas with less fur)

🚨 What problems can they cause?
Ħafur don’t just stay on the surface, they can migrate deeper into the body and cause:

- Painful infections
- Abscesses
- Persistent sneezing or nasal discharge
- Head shaking or ear pain
- Limping or swelling in the paws
In severe cases, internal migration requiring surgery

🛡️ Prevention tips:

- Avoid areas with tall or dry grass, especially during walks
- Check your dog thoroughly after every outing (nose, ears, paws, and coat)
- Brush your dog regularly, especially if they have long hair
- Keep the hair between their toes trimmed

📌 When should you see a vet?
If you notice sudden sneezing, head shaking, swelling, limping, or signs of discomfort, seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Early removal prevents more serious complications.

💚 Prevention is key to keeping your pets safe this season!

What we’ve found lately with our endoscope...

Over the past weeks, our team has removed objects such as plastic fabric, a pacifier teat, and even an ice cream stick from dogs’ stomachs 🐶

These cases often happen when pets ingest things they shouldn’t, which can lead to discomfort, vomiting, or more serious complications if not treated in time.

The good news is that, thanks to endoscopy, many of these cases can be resolved using a minimally invasive approach. This procedure is performed using a specialized camera that allows us to visualize the digestive tract and safely retrieve foreign objects without the need for open surgery, reducing pain and promoting faster recovery.

At our clinic, we are equipped with the technology and expertise to perform these procedures safely and effectively.

⚠️ If you suspect your pet has ingested something they shouldn’t, don’t wait, seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Early intervention helps prevent risks and complications.

✨ A Successful Surgery Story: Mandy ✨

Mandy came to us showing signs of severe discomfort, including persistent pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, and low energy. After thorough evaluation, we determined that she required a gallbladder removal surgery, a complex procedure, especially because Mandy also had underlying cardiac and kidney conditions.

🩺 Abdominal ultrasound played a key role in her diagnosis, revealing abnormal gallbladder contents consistent with a serious condition that required prompt surgical intervention. Blood test values were also crucial, providing essential information that supported a timely and accurate diagnosis. This highlights how important advanced diagnostics are in guiding life-saving decisions.

Thanks to the expertise and dedication of our team, the surgery was successfully performed, and Mandy’s gallbladder was safely removed. She remained under close monitoring in our intensive care unit, where she received supportive care, including a feeding tube during her recovery.

We’re delighted to report that just a few days after surgery, Mandy began eating on her own again and showed a remarkable improvement in her overall condition 🐾✨

👏 A big thumbs up to our surgery, anesthesia, imaging, hospitalization, and monitoring teams for their outstanding work and commitment to Mandy’s care.

💙 And of course, our appreciation goes to Mandy’s owners for their trust and support throughout this journey.

Stories like Mandy’s remind us why we do what we do every day

🐦 Egg Binding in Birds: What You Should Know

Egg binding is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition in birds, especially in small species like budgies, cockatiels, and conures. It occurs when a bird cannot pass an egg normally.

🔍 How to identify it:

- Constant straining without producing an egg
- Lethargy or weakness
- Swollen abdomen
- Tail bobbing when breathing
- Staying at the bottom of the cage
- Decreased appetite

⚠️ If you notice these signs, seek veterinary care immediately. Time is critical.

💉 What is the Suprelorin implant?
Suprelorin (deslorelin) is a hormonal implant that helps regulate or stop reproductive activity. It is used as a preventive tool in birds with:

- Chronic egg-laying
- Hormonal problems
- Recurrent risk of egg binding

✔️ Benefits:

- Reduces egg production
- Decreases reproductive behaviors
- Helps prevent serious complications

❤️ Prevention is key:

- Balanced diet (rich in calcium)
- Avoid excessive reproductive stimulation
- Regular veterinary check-ups

If you have concerns about your bird’s reproductive health, consult with us. We’re here to help keep them healthy and happy!

⚠️ Graphic Images Ahead ⚠️

As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness about the challenges faced by hedgehogs, we are sharing details of a particularly concerning rescue case.

A few days ago, a hedgehog was collected from Salini after being found caught in discarded fishing equipment. What we discovered was devastating.

This hedgehog was found with 10 fishing hooks embedded in his body. He is currently receiving treatment and is under constant monitoring as efforts continue to save his life.

🚯 This is a powerful reminder of how careless human behaviour has severe consequences for wildlife. Please dispose of waste responsibly and help protect and conserve wildlife.

Thanks to Nature Trust volunteers .trust.malta for bringing to us and caring. If you spot any of the local wild animals injured or in danger, please call the Wildlife Rescue Team on 99999505.
