Myth: Giving water to a hot horse is bad.

Fact: It is best to rehydrate sweaty, hardworking horses without delay – the key is in knowing how much to allow at one time as a horse’s stomach can only hold about 2 to 3 gallons at a time, according to Anthony Blikslager, DVM, PhD, DACVS. Offering hot, sweaty horses up to a half gallon of water every 20 minutes is the safest way to ensure the horse’s stomach has time to empty before more water is consumed.

Last time I wrote about horse showing, it was to say I was done trying to do it. I used to show at least three or four times a year, but I couldn’t afford it when I went back to school six years ago, and even once I was out and working again I couldn’t stomach spending a whole grand in one week...

OMEGA 3’s!

When it comes to fat, there’s one type you don’t want to cut back on: omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3’s are required by the body, and are touted as being able to reduce inflammation, support neurological development, and reduce stiffness/pain associated with arthritis, and more.

Most don’t realize there are multiple types of omega-3’s, and they are not all created equal. Understanding which omega-3 you are using is helpful when you have certain goals in mind. For example, flax seed is rich in the omega-3 ALA, fish oil contains the omega-3’s EPA and DHA, and green lipped mussel contains high levels of the omega-3 ETA.

The body uses each omega-3 differently.

For example, ALA comes from plants, and is primarily a precursor to other fatty acids – the body must first convert it to EPA and DHA, or is simply stored as fat. Flax seed is excellent for improving shine and body condition of horses as it contains elevated levels of fat and the omega-3 ALA.

However, the body can only convert between 8% to 21% of ALA into usable forms- EPA & DHA.

Therefore, if the goal is to provide anti-inflammatory support, ensure optimal reproductive function, or support the nervous system, it is more effective to provide fish oil which is rich in omega-3’s EPA & DHA, and already in the form the body can readily utilize.

Another omega-3 gaining popularity is ETA, which has been shown to be highly effective at reducing pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. The New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel contains highly concentrated levels of the omega-3 ETA.

To date, there is no established level of omega 3s in the diet, or an ideal ratio, however a 1:1-1:6 omega 3:6 ratio is generally accepted.
