10 Golden Rules for Successful Goat Farming
Goat farming is not just about keeping goats and collecting milk. 🥛
Good management = Healthy goats + Better milk production + Lower costs.
1️⃣ Choose the right breed
Select goats suitable for your climate and your farming goal. Dairy breeds such as Saanen can produce good milk when properly managed.
2️⃣ Always provide clean drinking water 💧
Fresh water should be available throughout the day. Water intake has a direct effect on feed intake and milk production.
3️⃣ Feed according to production 🌿
Good-quality green fodder should form an important part of the diet. Dairy goats also need a properly balanced concentrate, minerals and other nutrients according to their needs.
4️⃣ Never suddenly change the feed
Introduce new feed gradually. Sudden changes can cause digestive problems and reduce performance.
5️⃣ Keep the shed clean and dry 🧹
Remove manure regularly, maintain good ventilation and prevent excessive moisture. A clean shed helps reduce disease and unpleasant smells.
6️⃣ Check every goat every day 👀
Look for:
• Loss of appetite
• Fever or weakness
• Coughing
• Diarrhea
• Lameness
• Swollen udder
• Abnormal milk
Early detection can save a goat and reduce treatment costs.
7️⃣ Take mastitis seriously 🥛⚠️
Check the udder regularly and observe the milk for abnormal color, clots, blood or changes in consistency. Separate and manage affected animals appropriately and seek veterinary advice when needed.
8️⃣ Keep accurate records 📋
Record:
• Daily milk production
• Breeding dates
• Kidding dates
• Vaccinations
• Deworming
• Treatments
• Feed changes
Good records help you identify which goats are performing well.
9️⃣ Do not overuse medicines 💊
Use antibiotics and other veterinary medicines only when appropriate and follow veterinary advice, including the required milk withdrawal period.
