Despite our desperate wishes, we constantly encounter horrendous circumstances created by human greed.
On Thursday April 11, Nabiya rescued 28 cats from an illegal breeder in Namyangju.
After 10 years of illegally breeding cats and making money from it, the operator finally agreed to give up ownership of the cats, due to his age and incapability of maintaining the breeding site.
These cats were merely commodities and their purpose of existing was solely to make money, and there was no such thing as a moral responsibility imposed neither on the seller nor on the buyers.
Moreover, we have a question to the buyers who considered the cats displayed in glass cases mere commodities. Does it not occur to you that such purchases are morally wrong, or are you simply ignoring the fact that these cats are being bought and sold under morally bankrupt circumstances? There is supply for these cats because there are people who demand them.
A total of 28 cats, including 23 adult cats, 1 one-month-old, and 4 cats less than a week old, have been hospitalized and received medical treatment.
Just like all the other breeding sites Nabiya has encountered, this one was also horrendous. Perhaps it was worse than any other breeding sites we had seen. The cats’ bodies under their long fur were incredibly skeletal and covered in excrements caused by diarrhea.
They all were malnourished and had skin, respiratory, and digestive diseases. They are now in the process of a thorough medical examination in order to find out if there are other ailments present. Just like all the other cats Nabiya had rescued from illegal breeding sites, these cats seemed to have big and small health problems commonly witnessed on artificially bred cats.
One of the mother cats had one eye bursted and was in need of an emergency operation. Even when she herself was in pain, the mother cat took care of her kitty that managed to survive an environment so horrendous that one could not even guarantee if a young kitty could survive to tomorrow.
The natural light that is so trivial to us scared these cats and thus they kept crawling into corners.
Although there were warm blankets in the hospital, the cats, heartbreakingly, remained hiding in the litter boxes, as if those boxes were the most comfortable places for them.
It is unimaginable how difficult these cats’ lives must have been.
It might take a while, but we hope that these cats become comfortable enough to accept love from humans.
Nabiya will do its best until these cats are healed, both mentally and physically, and find a forever family that will provide them with infinite love.
With your support, we will always take care of these cats.
