If you're thinking about getting a dog for protection, here’s a professional guide from Tropical Pets Care to help you make the right choice:
πŸ• TOP DOG BREEDS FOR PROTECTION & POWER
Not all dogs are naturally suited for guarding. True protection dogs combine strength, intelligence, loyalty, and trainability. Some of the most reliable breeds include:
Turkish Kangal – Exceptional bite force and natural guardian instincts
Caucasian Shepherd – Fearless, highly territorial, ideal for large compounds
Boerboel – Powerful, confident, and very protective of family
Rottweiler – Loyal, intelligent, and highly trainable
Alabai – Naturally defensive and independent
Cane Corso – Strong, alert, and excellent guard dog
Dogo Argentino – Courageous and very protective
Belgian Malinois – Elite intelligence, widely used in security forces
Presa Canario – Dominant, powerful, and requires experienced handling
⚠️ Important Advice from Tropical Pets Care:
βœ”οΈ A good guard dog is trained, not just born
βœ”οΈ Early socialization and obedience training is critical
βœ”οΈ Some breeds require experienced handlers
βœ”οΈ Poor training can turn a strong dog into a liability instead of protection

As families come together this festive season to celebrate, share meals, and create memories, let us also remember to keep our loved ones safe. πŸ‘πŸŽ„
RABIES is a deadly but preventable disease. Associating with unvaccinated dogs, cats, or other animals puts children and adults at serious risk. A simple bite, scratch, or lick on broken skin can transmit the virusβ€”and once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal.

πŸ‘‰ What families should do:
Ensure all pets are vaccinated against rabies and boosters are up to date.
Do not allow children to play with stray or unknown animals.
Avoid handling animals that show unusual behavior such as aggression, excessive salivation, or restlessness.
In case of a bite or scratch, wash the wound immediately with soap and running water and seek medical attention at once.
This festive season, let joy not turn into tragedy. Vaccinate your pets. Protect your family. Stop rabies.

RABIES
Prepared by Tropical Pets Care
Definition
Rabies is a fatal viral zoonotic disease caused by the Rabies virus (a Lyssavirus) that affects the central nervous system of mammals, including dogs, cats, livestock, wildlife, and humans.
It is mainly transmitted through the bite, scratch, or saliva of an infected animal entering broken skin or mucous membranes.
Diagnosis
Rabies diagnosis is challenging before death and is mainly confirmed post-mortem.
In Animals
Clinical signs (suggestive, not confirmatory):
Sudden behavior changes (aggression, restlessness, fearfulness)
Excessive salivation / foaming at the mouth
Difficulty swallowing
Uncoordinated movement, paralysis
Biting objects, animals, or people without provocation
Laboratory confirmation:
Direct Fluorescent Antibody Test (dFA) on brain tissue (gold standard)
PCR tests where available
⚠️ Any animal suspected of rabies should NOT be handled without protection.
In Humans
History of exposure (bite/scratch)
Laboratory tests (saliva, CSF, skin biopsy) – mostly in advanced centers
Diagnosis is often clinical once symptoms appear, but survival is extremely rare.
Treatment
❌ There is NO effective treatment once rabies clinical signs appear in animals or humans.
The disease is almost 100% fatal after symptom onset.
Management in animals:
Suspected rabid animals are humanely euthanized
Observation or quarantine (10–14 days) may be applied for biting dogs/cats that appear healthy and are vaccinated
Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP)
PEP is life-saving if administered before symptoms appear.
Immediate First Aid (Very Critical)
Wash the wound immediately and thoroughly with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes
Apply iodine or antiseptic if available
Seek medical/veterinary attention immediately
In Humans
PEP consists of:
Rabies Vaccine
Given on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 (standard schedule)
Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG)
Given once (Day 0)
Infiltrated around the wound (for severe exposures)
βœ… Highly effective when given o

In Male dogs
Swollen or painful testicles
Scrotal dermatitis
Reduced libido
Infertility
Enlarged lymph nodes

Vaginal discharge after abortion
Failure to conceive
Infertility
In Both sexes
Lethargy, weakness
Weight loss
Enlarged lymph nodes
Chronic back pain or lameness
Eye problems (uveitis – less common)
⚠️ Some dogs may appear clinically normal but still spread the disease.
πŸ§ͺ Diagnosis
Serology tests (RSAT, ELISA, AGID)
Blood culture (definitive but slow and risky)
PCR (where available)
πŸ‘‰ Always confirm with repeat testing, especially in breeding dogs.
πŸ’Š Treatment
⚠️ Treatment is difficult and often unsuccessful. Relapses are common.
Common antibiotic protocols (long-term):
Doxycycline + Streptomycin
or
Doxycycline + Rifampicin
⏳ Treatment duration: 4–6 weeks or longer
❗ Even after treatment, dogs may remain carriers.
🚫 Control & Management (Very Important)
Do NOT breed infected dogs
Neutering (spay/castration) strongly recommended
Isolate infected animals
Regular testing in kennels
Strict hygiene (gloves, disinfectants)
πŸ§πŸ½β€β™‚οΈ Public Health Importance
Humans can be infected through:
Contact with aborted materials
Blood, semen, vaginal discharges
