Feline calicivirus infection

This is a highly contagious viral disease in cats with significant cause of upper respiratory and oral infection.
Infected cats develop oral ulcers on the tongue, hard palate, gums, lips and nose.
The virus is shed in saliva or secretions from the nose and eyes and can survive upto a week in a contaminated environment.
Supportive therapy is given to the infected cats.
Vaccine against feline calicivirus is available.

Feline scabies.
This is a highly contagious skin infestation among cats caused by skin burrowing mite- Notoedres cati.
It is characterized by:
*Alopecia
*crusty scabs formation
*intense pruritus
* inflammation
Management is through administration of ivermectin subcutaneously.

Scaly leg mites in turkeys.

This is a condition caused by a mite called 'Knemidocoptes Mutans'. The mite burrows under the bird's leg skin to feed on the keratin.
Keratin exudes from leg tissue causing leg scales to be thickened and eventually becoming encrusted and lifted away from the skin.

These are nocturnal comouflaging reptiles that can be kept as pets. The most distinctive feature in these reptiles is the wide and thick tail used in fat storage.

HETEROCHROMIA

This is a condition in which a dog/cat has two different colored eyes(one blue and othet yellow, green or brown).
The condition is common in white coated dogs/cats but can also be present in other colors provided by possess the ‘white spotting gene’. This gene prevents melanocytes migrating to both eyes during development or the dominant gene masks other gene color.
These animals can be either partial or complete heterochromic.
Deafness is more common in these heterochromic animals as the white gene cause degradation of cochlea.
