BSF Farmers
How is your production when using sugar, molasses, or glucose for adult flies?

For us, we no longer use them because they become smelly quickly and can confuse flies, causing them to lay eggs in the wrong places.

What has been your experience?

🐥 Did you know?

Putting ducks (bata) in your Azolla pond helps control frogs naturally, as they feed on them while also benefiting from the Azolla as feed.

✅ Helps reduce frogs in the pond
✅ Ducks enjoy feeding on Azolla
✅ Natural and cost-effective management

⚠️ Don't leave the ducks in the pond all the time. Allow them access only about twice per month to avoid damaging the Azolla.

Many people have been asking how we deal with ants climbing into our BSF bins.

Mostly, ants become a problem when feeding BSF with kitchen waste because the oils and food residues attract them.

Our simple solution is to use cut plastic containers to cover the stand legs as shown. This creates a barrier that helps prevent ants from reaching the bins and disturbing the larvae.

A simple and effective method that has worked well on our farm. 🐛💪

Don't add too much or too little water to the mattress. Keep it just moist as shown and always clean. This provides a suitable environment for adult Black Soldier Flies to lay eggs and helps prevent unwanted odors and contamination.

BSF Farming Tip: Wash and replace adult BSF water at least once a week. When left for too long, it starts smelling and attracts flies to lay eggs there. Adult BSF may also lay around the water instead of the attractant. We wash and replace our water every week

We use a mix of market waste and green vegetables as attractants for our adult Black Soldier Flies.

We avoid highly smelly attractants like cow intestines because they tend to attract unwanted insects such as houseflies and horseflies, and can even draw dogs that may damage the rearing cages.

This method keeps the environment cleaner, safer, and more controlled while still effectively attracting the BSF for successful breeding.

BSF larvae are a good protein supplement for layers, but they should not be fed alone. Birds need a balanced formulated feed with all nutrients for good egg production.”

Challenges of Black Soldier Fly (BSF) Farming

Many people talk about the benefits of BSF farming, but it's also important to understand the challenges involved:

• Finding enough organic waste or kitchen waste can be difficult in some areas.
• Waste may produce unpleasant odors before it is fed to the larvae.
• Commercial-scale production is labor-intensive and requires consistent management.
• Starting on a large scale requires significant capital for structures, equipment, and breeding materials.
• Proper knowledge and training are needed to avoid costly mistakes.

The good news: Once the system is well established and managed properly, the benefits often outweigh the challenges. BSF farming can provide a sustainable source of animal feed, organic fertilizer, and a profitable agribusiness opportunity. 🌱🐛💰
