Insieme si va più lontano 🤜🤛

Oggi vi vogliamo parlare ancora di una collaborazione davvero importante per noi! 🦇

Da tempo il nostro CRAS collabora con la sezione di Genova dell’associazione Tutela Pipistrelli Genova, un team di volontarie esperte che si dedica alla salvaguardia di questi straordinari mammiferi alati. Grazie a questa sinergia, le competenze dell’associazione si uniscono alle nostre strutture per garantire il miglior recupero e la riabilitazione ai pipistrelli in difficoltà.

Negli ultimi mesi, insieme, abbiamo soccorso numerosi esemplari trovati feriti o in difficoltà, offrendo loro cure adeguate fino al rilascio in natura. 💙

👉 Se trovi un pipistrello a terra o in difficoltà, non prendere iniziative e contattaci subito! Ti guideremo su come intervenire nel modo più sicuro ed efficace.

Grazie a questa collaborazione, possiamo offrire a queste specie fondamentali per l’ecosistema una seconda possibilità.💪🏻

MONOGAMIA? NO GRAZIE! Nemmeno a San Valentino.. 🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕🦇💕
Eh già, ai nostri amici pipistrelli il romanticismo non piace per niente!
La monogamia per loro è cosa rara: il maschio costruisce dei veri e propri harem, dove si riproduce con un gruppo fidelizzato di 5-15 femmine. Per di più, questo latin lover (pure sproporzionato a livello testicolare) non partecipa nemmeno all’allevamento dei piccoli!
Che vita da inferno vero?
E volete sapere una curiosità?
In alcune zone tropicali dell’America Centrale e Meridionale ci sono pipistrelli che costruiscono delle vere e proprie tende con l’utilizzo di foglie, all’interno delle quali invitano il proprio harem di femmine.
Questa capanna colma di cuori, oltre a proteggere da eventuali predatori, ripara da pioggia e venti.

Our bat friends do not care for romance at all.
Monogamy is a rare thing for them: the male bat establishes real harems where he breeds with a loyal group of 5-15 females. This Latin lover (who, by the way, has disproportionate testicles) does not even take part in the upbringing of the puppies!
A real hell of a life, isn't it?
Do you want to know a fun fact?
In some tropical areas of Central and South America there are bats that build actual tents out of leaves and they invite their harem of females to live in them. This hut full of hearts protect them from predators, rain and wind.

🦇MISS NOTTOLA 2025!🦇
Come iniziare al meglio il nuovo anno se non con l’ingresso di una splendida Nottola Minore, o Nottola di Leisler (Nyctalus leisleri), la più piccola tra le tre specie europee!🖤
Ecco qualche curiosità:
1️⃣La nottola minore è un animale migratore, che all’interno del suo areale europeo compie spostamenti stagionali superiori anche a 1.500 km. Sembra che gli esemplari italiani riescano a migrare fino in Polonia!
⁠2️⃣⁠La longevità massima accertata fino ad oggi è di ben 11 anni!
3️⃣Il pelo è più lungo e tende a sollevarsi quando si eccita, specialmente nei maschi.
4️⃣Il Nyctalus leisleri è un vero e proprio latin lover: nel periodo dell'accoppiamento può avere fino a 11 femmine nel suo harem, è molto possessivo e non permette a nessun altro maschio di avvicinarsi!

Secondo voi cosa li rende così irresistibili? Sarà forse il loro trago (tratto diagnostico dell’orecchio) a forma di funghetto?🥰

What better way to start the new year than by welcoming this wonderful Leisler’s bat (Nictalys leisleri), also known as the “hairy-armed bat”, the smallest of the three European species!🖤
Here are some fun facts about them:
1️⃣The Leisler’s bat is a migratory animal, performing seasonal movements of over 1,500km within its European range. It seems that Italian specimens can migrate all the way to Poland!
⁠2️⃣⁠The maximum recorded lifespan for this species is an impressive 11 years!
3️⃣Its fur is longer and tends to stand up when excited - especially in males.
4️⃣Nyctalus leisleri is a true Latin lover: during the breeding season, a single male can have up to 11 females in his harem! He is extremely possessive and won’t let any other male get near his ladies!

What do you think makes them so irresistible? Could it be their adorable mushroom-shaped tragus (a key diagnostic ear feature)?🥰

UN MAZZO DI MOLOSSI PER VOI… 🦇🦇🦇🦇
Questa è la storia di una famiglia di buon cuore di Genova, quartiere di San Fruttuoso. La loro tapparella è rimasta inattiva per quarant'anni per consentire a una colonia di molossi di Cestoni (il secondo pipistrello più grande d'Italia) di vivere e riprodursi di generazione in generazione in piena tranquillità.
A fine ottobre, dopo la morte del coniuge, l’anziana signora ha deciso di lasciare l’alloggio e ha chiesto al figlio di contattare il CRAS di Campomorone. Era preoccupata per il benessere dei pipistrelli in vista dei lavori di ristrutturazione posti in atto dai proprietari.
I quattro pipistrelli sono stati affidati alle nostre cure, presso il Cras di Campomorone con il quale collaboriamo.
Ci stiamo prendendo cura di loro, cercando di renderli autonomi nell’alimentazione in cattività.
In primavera, non appena sarà disponibile cibo a sufficienza per loro, verranno liberati in un'area idonea, dove è presente la loro specie.

A BOUQUET OF FREE-TAILED BATS FOR YOU
This is the story of a good-hearted family in Genoa, in the neighbourhood San Fruttuoso.
They haven't been winding their roller shutter up or down for forty years to allow a colony of free-tailed bats (the second largest bat in Italy) to live and mate, generation after generation, in peace and quiet.
At the end of October, after the death of her husband, the elderly lady decided to leave the apartment and told her son to contact the Wild Life Shelter (CRAS) in Campomorone. She was concerned about the well-being of the bats because the landlords would start the renovation of the apartment.
The 4 free-tailed bats are now sheltered at CRAS/Tutela Pipistrelli Genoa, where they are taken good care of and where they are being taught how to eat independently in captivity.
In spring, as soon as the skies will offer them enough appropriate food, the bats will be released in an area where their species is present and where they will be able to prosper.

ECOLOCALIZZAZIONE:

Vi ricordate come fa il Batman di Christian Bale a rintracciare e sconfiggere Joker nel celeberrimo film di Nolan Il Cavaliere Oscuro? Grazie ad una potente invenzione di Lucius Fox l’eroe mascherato riesce ad incrociare i segnali provenienti da tutti i dispositivi telefonici di Gotham City per sfruttarli nella caccia al super criminale. In realtà questo espediente narrativo apparentemente ai limiti del fantascientifico attinge a piene mani dalla fisica e dalla natura stessa dei nostri amati pipistrelli. Stiamo parlando dell’ ECOLOCALIZZAZIONE. Ma come funziona? il pipistrello emette un breve suono. Quest’ultimo, incontrando ostacoli sul suo percorso, viene riflesso e torna al soggetto che lo ha prodotto sotto forma di eco. A questo punto l’animale sarà in grado di misurare il tempo intercorso tra l’istante in cui il suono è stato emesso e quello in cui l’eco torna al proprio orecchio. Come “rondini della notte” i pipistrelli catturano gli insetti in volo ma, grazie all’ecolocalizzazione, ovviamente riescono a farlo al buio. Insomma, abbiamo dei piccoli detective nonché specialisti in FISICA!!

Do you remember how Christian Bale’s Batman found and defeated Joker in The Dark Knight? Thanks to one of Lucius Fox’s inventions, the hero manages to track all of Gotham City’s mobile communications to hunt the criminal down. However incredible and seemingly sci-fi, this trick is based on real physics and bats themselves. It’s all about echolocation! Do you know how it works? A bat produces a quick sound that, as it crosses obstacles, gets deflected back to the bat as an echo. The bat can now measure the timeframe between the moment when the sound was produced and when the echo reached back into its ear. Like “night swallows", bats capture insects while flying and can do so in the dark thanks to this echolocation. They’re true detectives and physics experts!!

L’evento “Biodiversità da proteggere” organizzato dai Comuni di Rovegno e Fontanigorda è stato un prezioso tavolo di confronto che siamo sicuri sia servito come rampa di lancio per collaborazioni future, eventi e proposte di gestione. Tra gli enti ad aver partecipato c’erano Arpal , Parco Antola e ovviamente noi, di Tutela Pipistrelli Genova, ognuno portando la propria esperienza e il proprio unico punto di vista sulla tutela dell’incredibile biodiversità ligure. E non vediamo l’ora di sviluppare insieme progetti futuri!

Grazie a tutti i partecipanti e sostenitori e, ovviamente, ai Comuni di cui siamo stati ospiti che hanno saputo riconoscere il valore della biodiversità e si stanno adoperando per proteggerla.

Comune di Rovegno and Comune di Fontanigorda organised a panel discussion about protecting the local biodiversity, focusing on bats and moths. Of course, we couldn’t miss it and we participated in the discussion together with other public entities such as Arpal and Antola Natural Regional Park. Each organisation brought to the table their unique expertise. Lastly, the event laid the foundations for future collaborations and biodiversity conservation proposals and we’re looking forward to seeing where this is going to take us next!

Thanks to all participants and supporter as well as to the Comuni that hosted the event and recognised the value of the biodiversity they’re working to protect.

International Bat Appreciation Day – April 17, 2024.
Ogni anno si celebra questa Giornata Internazionale per omaggiare i pipistrelli. Ma perchè sono così importanti?
I chirotteri sono il secondo ordine di mammiferi con il più alto numero di specie (circa 1400 in tutto il mondo) superati solo dai roditori.
Tante specie= tanti adattamenti!
Vi sono pipistrelli che si nutrono di frutta, altri sono ematofagi (non in Europa, state tranquilli). Altri ancora mangiano nettare e polline contribuendo così all’impollinazione di centinaia di piante come l’Agave tequilana dal quale si estrae la famosa bevanda Tequila. Infine i più numerosi sono insettivori come tutte le specie italiane i quali, oltre a liberarci di numerosissimi insetti fastidiosi per noi, sono in prima linea nella lotta biologica contro quegli insetti nocivi all’agricoltura. Dei pesticidi naturali e senza controindicazioni, anzi! Pensate che il loro guano è pure un ottimo fertilizzante, venduto a caro prezzo. Quindi farebbero un doppio lavoro, senza nessun costo per noi, ma solo beneficio per il pianeta.
Insomma i pipistrelli hanno moltissimi pregi, questi sono solo alcuni!
Infatti la loro presenza è un bioindicatore della qualità ambientale e ci fornisce una fotografia dello stato di salute di ciò che abbiamo intorno.
Adesso che avete più motivi per apprezzarli, ricordatevi di questo quando alla sera alzerete gli occhi e scruterete questi mammiferi volanti, dal peso di pochi grammi, andare in giro a compiere il loro mestiere, silenziosamente, senza chiedere nulla in cambio.

Each year we celebrate this International Day to remember to pay homage to bats. Why are they so important?
With about 1,400 species around the world, bats are the second largest order of mammals after rodents.
Many species = many adaptations!
Some bats eat fruit, other bats feed on blood (don't worry, not in Europe). Other bat species eat nectar and pollen and by doing this they help pollinate hundreds of plants, among which the blue agave that is the main ingredient of tequila! However, most species, as all species in Italy, eat bugs. They get rid of annoying bugs for us and they help killing bugs that are bad for agriculture. Basically, they are all-natural pesticides, with no contraindications! Also, bat guano is a top-quality fertilizer and it is sold for good money. They do two jobs, at no cost for us, but to a great benefit for the planet.
To sum it up, bats have many merits, and these are just a few examples!
Their presence is a bioindicator of good quality of the environment and it gives us a idea of the health state of what surrounds us.
Now that you know more reasons why bats should be appreciated, remember them when you'll raise your eyes to the sky at night and see these flying mammals, weighing only a few grams, silently doing their job, asking nothing in return.
