Kudos to Greens Zoological - Vantara (India) & ACTP - Association for the conservation of Threatened Parrots

Once a cherished part of Brazil’s Caatinga biome, Spix’s Macaws (Cyanopsitta spixii) faced overwhelming threats from habitat destruction, agriculture, invasive species, and illegal trade. In 2019, they were officially listed as Extinct in the Wild on the IUCN Red List, following the disappearance of the last known wild Spix’s Macaw in 2000.

But extinction doesn’t have to mean the end. Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre (GZRRC), an affiliate of Vantara, and the Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots (ACTP) have launched a historic initiative to return 41 Spix’s Macaws to their native home. Carefully selected for their health and genetic diversity, these macaws embody hope and determination for global conservation efforts.

This mission is more than a reintroduction—it’s a testament to the power of collaboration and our shared responsibility to restore what was lost.

Together, we’re giving Spix’s Macaws a second chance to soar. 💙

✨ Wild leucistic Yellow-throated Toucan..
🔴 The chestnut-mandibled toucan or Swainson’s toucan.
(Ramphastos ambiguus swainsonii)
🔴 This Surprisingly White Yellow-Throated Toucan Was Spotted In Costa Rica Within Its Native Habitat. The Bird’s Odd Appearance Is Due To Leucism, A Genetic Condition That Leads To An Absence Of Pigmentation. Birds With Plumage In Abnormal Colors Are Prone To Increased Predation And Weak Feathers Due To Lack Of Melanin
This is a Swainson's toucan. He has a form of albinism which is a genetic condition that results from a partial or complete lack of the melanin pigment in an animal's skin, fur, feathers, etc. This gives the affected animal a white or colorless appearance (the opposite condition is melanism which gives an animal a dark or black appearance due to an excessive amount of melanin, think of "black panthers" as an example).
🔴 True Albinos are melanin free Albinic animals and birds and so they are solid white coloured with red eyes & clear(beige or white) beaks, (pink) feets and (white tipped pink) toe nails.This Toucan clearly has black eyes & grey feets and this negates both a true Albino or Lutino (lutein full albinic) mutation. It could be either some sort of heavy Dilute mutation or Leucic (Leucistic) mutation or possibly some sort of black eyed & feets Parino (Partial-Albinic) mutation.
🔴The yellow-throated toucan or Black-mandibled Toucan,(Ramphastos ambiguus) is a large toucan in the family Ramphastidae found in Central and northern South America.
🔴 Conservation status:(NT)
Near Threatened
The IUCN has assessed the yellow-throated toucan as Near Threatened. It has a very large range, but its population size is not known and is believed to be decreasing. The major threat is continuing conversion of its forest habitat to agriculture and ranching; hunting is also a threat. "Yellow-throated Toucan is able to tolerate some human disturbance and forest alteration, but is nonetheless affected greatly by habitat loss.
🔴Three subspecies of yellow-throated toucan are recognized:
1- Chestnut-mandibled" toucan, R. a. swainsonii
from southeastern Honduras through Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and western Colombia to southwestern Ecuador
2- Black-mandibled" toucan (in part), the nominate R. a. ambiguus
from southwestern Colombia on the eastern slope of the Andes to south-central Peru
3- Black-mandibled" toucan (in part), R. a. abbreviatus
northeastern Colombia and northwestern and northern Venezuela
🔴 All three subspecies were originally described as separate species. R. a. abbreviatus was relatively early reassigned as a subspecies of R. a. ambiguus. Subspecies R. a. swainsonii differs from ambiguus by 1.35% in mitochondrial DNA which led to its treatment as a species by major taxonomies until about 2010.
🔴These toucans are largely frugivorous, they eat from a wide variety of fruiting trees and play a vital role in seed dispersal. but like other toucans, occasionally feeds on insects, lizards, and the eggs of other birds.
