Hello, ‘Understanding Hip Dysplasia in Dogs’
✅ Hip X-rays or pelvic X-rays are common in most SA vet practices.
✅ Examine the patient on the ground at rest, walk, trot, run. Ask the family to record videos of the same over some time.
✅ Get the patient under sedation and a good muscle relaxant before performing the radiograph.
✅ Physical examination is the key. Check for range of motion, Ortolani sign, Crepitus, Pain in certain positions and muscle weakness.
✅ Proper positioning is mandatory in X-rays. Poor positioning = Poor accuracy.
✅ Hip dysplasia is GENETIC/HERITABLE. Do not breed them.
✅ Oral meds, Surgery and Physiotherapy are the key in helping them recover and maintain a healthy/pain-free hip. Based on Radiograph your ‘Vet’ will grade them and recommend the best option.
✅ Hip dysplasia/ Luxation is a DJD, it will get worse with time early detection and early management are important.
