Women in India hold a vital position within the agricultural sector, and their contributions extend beyond mere farming and labor; they are increasingly engaging in research and emerging as entrepreneurs. While there are numerous compelling stories from every village, town, and district, here's one exemplary woman whose determination led to significant transformation.
Rani Devi from Pandpa village in Bihar, married at a young age. Constrained by domestic responsibilities, her aspirations were hindered by societal resistance. Nevertheless, she seized the opportunity to join us and Professional Assistance for Development Action (PRADAN) as a Community Resource Person (CRP), where she trained farmers in the Direct Sowing of Rice (DSR). With this knowledge and backing, Rani cultivated DSR on 0.6 acres, achieving an impressive yield of 14.5 quintals, significantly surpassing traditional methods.
This accomplishment provided her with additional income and altered her family's perception. Her husband began to share household responsibilities and acknowledged her contributions. Presently, Rani is a passionate advocate for DSR and women's empowerment, guiding more than 100 farmers across districts. We take great pride in Rani and wholeheartedly support her ongoing journey.

Saroj Devi, a millet farmer from Bharatpur, was married at the age of 18. While she actively assisted her husband in farming, she aspired to increase her family's income to cover her daughter's coaching fees and her son's college education. To pursue this goal, she participated in our women farmer training program.
During this program, she learned to enhance her farming practices and incorporate hybrid millet, which offers better resistance to drought, pests, and diseases. She chose to cultivate hybrid millet on 20 acres of her 40-acre land. As a result, Saroj significantly reduced her pesticide and fertilizer costs, improved the quality of her millet, achieved higher market prices, increased her crop yield, and augmented her family income.
Today, she supports her family and promotes hybrid millet farming, highlighting its advantages, such as higher yields, cost savings, and financial security, while encouraging fellow farmers to adopt these practices. Saroj Devi's journey is inspiring, as it demonstrates that women in agriculture can fulfill their aspirations with appropriate resources. With the #2MillionWomen, we aim to provide women access to essential resources, knowledge, finances, training and more, so they can thrive.

Can an illiterate tribal woman embark on a transformative journey? Absolutely!
Meet Kavita Bai, a remarkable tribal woman from Khakrakoylari village in Betul district. Initially feeling inadequately prepared to drive the change she desired, she soon discovered that the challenges of low farm productivity, insufficient income, food instability, and overall socio-economic hardship were common struggles among her fellow villagers. This realization ignited her passion to become the catalyst for the change she envisioned for herself and her community. Thus began her inspirational journey of resilience, leadership, and bravery.
Kavita spearheaded initiatives to enhance her village’s land and water resources through the MGNREGS—a program designed to bolster the livelihoods of rural residents in India. She successfully oversaw the construction of a farm pond, significantly improving irrigation for her 2-acre plot. Embracing new opportunities, she also joined our women-led Farmers Producer Organization (FPO), advocating for commercial maize farming. By adopting hybrid seeds and better farming practices, her maize yield skyrocketed from 10-12 quintals to 17-18 quintals per acre.
Through the FPO, she sold her harvest, ensuring fair pricing and transparency, a pivotal step that established her identity as a recognized farmer. With the backing of the FPO, she now inspires and mobilizes other women in her community. Kavita Bai’s journey resonates with countless women in agriculture, and that's the vision behind our #2MillionWomen initiative!

Is it possible to conserve 30% of soil by 2030?
This crucial question drives numerous agricultural researchers to find solutions. Implementing effective farming strategies and encouraging biodiversity through diverse crops and supporting growth of beneficial organisms strengthens the soil ecosystem. Supporting advanced and sustainable agriculture practices and soil-friendly policies ensures long-term soil fertility and resilience, protecting both farm productivity and the environment for future generations.

All organisms in an ecosystem are interconnected, forming a delicate balance that supports biodiversity. Each species, from the smallest microbe to the largest predator, plays a specific role in maintaining the system. If any one organism is removed, it disrupts food chains, nutrient cycles, and habitat stability.
By understanding the interconnectedness of all species and working to protect and sustain them, we're building a resilient ecosystem crucial for supporting the food supply chain and securing future food safety. Maintaining biodiversity is also essential for soil health, pest control and crop resilience, ensuring sustainable farming and long-term productivity.

Corteva analysts specializing in #soilhealth have consistently emphasized the adverse effects of uninterrupted crop cultivation on the same soil without replenishing essential nutrients.
This unsustainable agricultural technique has the potential to gradually diminish soil quality, resulting in reduced yields and potential substantial harm to the land.
Projections by soil health analysts indicate that soil quality could significantly deteriorate within the next six decades if existing farming methods persist without intervention.
This concerning forecast highlights the critical importance of adopting sustainable farming practices that prioritize soil health and fertility. It is imperative to focus on strategies like crop rotation, cover cropping, and nutrient management plans to mitigate the negative impact on soil health.

Paulina's story
In healthy soils, an entire community of organisms exists together in a harmonious balance. Fungi, bacteria, earthworms, and many other living organisms play a role in keeping soils fertile. Among them are nematodes, which are microscopic roundworms that are mostly beneficial, helping to stimulate soil nutrient cycles and keeping damaging plant pests and diseases at bay.
But not all nematodes are good. Plant-parasitic nematodes attack and damage plants. They can ravage crops and destroy harvests by damaging roots and making plants more vulnerable to diseases and other stress factors, such as weather conditions.
To maintain healthy soil, farmers need to effectively protect their crops from plant-parasitic nematode damage without disrupting the healthy balance of beneficial organisms in the soil.
This requires selective management of nematodes. We have been working closely with farmers to help them understand the need for “selectivity” and identify the right crop protection measures.
