As part of our flagship CAMPA-funded project, “An Integrated Conservation Initiative of Turtles Emphasising on Turtles in Temple Ponds of Assam”, Assam State Zoo cm Botanical Garden proudly organized a special orientation programme titled “Turtle Talk: Conversations in Conservation” for our dedicated veterinary interns and zoo staff.
This in-house capacity-building session focused on the identification and management of turtle species, empowering participants with practical knowledge on species recognition, veterinary care, ecological requirements, and conservation challenges. From addressing threats to critically endangered species like the Black Softshell Turtle (Nilssonia nigricans) to managing invasive species such as the Red-eared Slider, the training reinforced our zoo’s commitment to evidence-based conservation action.
As Assam’s premier ex-situ conservation institution, Assam State Zoo is not only protecting biodiversity within its premises but also taking the lead in turtle conservation across temple ponds in the state.
