A bowhead whale survived a harpoon strike for more than a century, carrying the weapon through generations of human history. 🐋⏳

In 2007, Inupiat whalers harvesting a bowhead whale near Barrow, Alaska, discovered an old bomb-lance fragment embedded near its right shoulder blade. Experts identified it as a model patented in 1879 and made obsolete in 1885, concluding it was probably fired around 1890. The whale had therefore carried the weapon for roughly 117 years—powerful evidence of the extraordinary longevity and resilience of bowhead whales.

We’re excited to welcome Nunavik to Mystic Aquarium! 🐋

Nunavik, a 16-year-old male beluga whale, has arrived safely from Georgia Aquarium as part of a coordinated animal care effort among accredited institutions. Nunavik’s move is the first of many as a collaboration of accredited aquariums plans to rescue 30 belugas from the closed Marineland Canada facility. We’re proud to participate in a way that enables our partners at Georgia Aquarium to receive some of these rescued whales.
