Pet loss is loss. It is real, it is crushing, and it deserves recognition and validation, just like any other kind of grief.

The simple act of deactivating my dog’s microchip number made it feel like he didn’t really matter, like his life had no meaning. But he wasn’t a number: he was Archie. My Archie. And his life not only had meaning; it brought meaning to my life too.

And as long as we carry that meaning forward, our pets will live on. We can erase numbers from a database, but we can never erase the place they occupy in our hearts.

Weekend 2 of in-person classes for the QQI Level 6 Practical Dog Training course. We worked with some beautiful little puppies (two of which are featured here) on socialisation, and some equally beautiful adult dogs on shaping and chaining behaviours. So many different personalities, which makes for a great learning experience.

How dogs help me as an Autistic person. You don’t have to be Autistic or otherwise neurodivergent to feel a deep connection with animals, but many of us do for quite specific reasons. Dogs can be so beneficial for our bodies and our minds, helping us with emotional regulation, sensory processing, social connection, routine and structure, and so much more.

A little reminder that not all treat pouches are created equal…

This isn’t about criticising specific brands or styles, as everyone will obviously have different preferences. However, as an Autistic person with probable Dyspraxia/definite proprioception and coordination challenges, I can get very easily frustrated by belt clips that are hard for my fingers to keep open long enough to attach the pouch, or closures that are too fiddly and time consuming, which leads to the dog losing interest by the time I manage to access the reward.

Personally I much prefer magnetic closure over drawstring, and an adjustable waist strap so I can easily reposition the pouch if needed (for example, if the dog finds it an irresistible distraction and tries to play tug with it!). And sometimes a certain product seems great when you decide to buy it, but doesn’t really work well for what you need. Trial and error.

There’s no right or wrong here. But it’s worth remembering that trainers will all have different things that make their process easier, and for those of us who may be neurodivergent or disabled, there are some seemingly small, simple ways we can accommodate ourselves, starting with the equipment we use. 🙂

Now that my brain has recovered from all the travel and intensity of this past weekend, I wanted to share my thoughts on the start of my dog training journey at Creedons College!

What a fantastic group of people and a wonderful, supportive environment in which to learn and grow. And seven lovely dogs to work with! Thanks to Gus, Jack, Fionn, George, Marley, Buddy and Riley for being so cute and patient as I practised my training skills with them! More to come. 😊

Edit: I meant to say QQI Level 6, not Level 5!

I'm proud to say I've officially received my Pet Loss Grief Counsellor certificate from the British College of Canine Studies! I’m looking forward to combining this with my future work in dog training so that I can provide support to anyone who may be struggling with the loss of a beloved companion animal.

Stay tuned for updates! And in the meantime, if you or anyone you know has lost a pet and would like an empathetic person to work through your grief with you, please don’t hesitate to DM me or share my profile.
