Beautiful ears. Questionable listening skills.

Meet Alfie, this week’s Beyond the Breed volunteer! He’s kindly agreed to represent the Springer community and help us investigate what’s really going on behind those gorgeous ears. 👀

THE STEREOTYPE
A happy family dog who enjoys a nice walk.

THE REALITY
Springers are energetic, intelligent working dogs bred to search, flush and retrieve.

A gentle stroll may merely serve as their warm-up.

WHAT THEY NEED
Exercise, sniffing, training, searching games and help learning how to relax.

Running endlessly isn’t the only answer—their brains need a workout too.

THE SPANIEL OPERATING SYSTEM
Nose: connected ✅
Tail: active ✅
Ears: online only when convenient ✅
Mud detector: exceptionally reliable ✅

THE VERDICT
Affectionate, cheerful and brilliant fun—but they thrive when their energy and intelligence have somewhere productive to go.

Preferably somewhere washable.

Beautiful ears, a permanently wagging tail and enough enthusiasm to power the entire county… this week’s Beyond the Breed stars are Springer Spaniels! 🐾😂

They may look like cheerful family dogs who enjoy a nice walk—but underneath those silky ears is an intelligent working dog with a very busy nose and an apparently unlimited battery.

THE STEREOTYPE
Calm, easy, hypoallergenic family dogs who practically train themselves. 🧸

THE REALITY
“Doodle” covers many different crosses—but quite often, you’re combining two clever, energetic working breeds.

That’s a lot of brain underneath all that fluff!

WHAT THEY NEED
Exercise, sniffing, training, problem-solving and help learning how to switch off.

Otherwise, they may appoint themselves Head of Household Entertainment.

DON’T FORGET THE COAT
Low shedding doesn’t mean low maintenance.

Many need frequent brushing, combing and professional grooming—and their coat type isn’t always predictable.

THE VERDICT
Affectionate, funny and wonderfully clever—but not necessarily the effortless family pet they’re marketed as.

🐾 INTRODUCING: BEYOND THE BREED 🐾

You might recognise a few of these faces—they’re all much-loved members of the Marley’s Pals gang, and they’re about to become the stars of our brand-new weekly series! 🤍

Every dog breed comes with its own stereotypes:

“Labradors are born sensible.”
“Whippets need endless exercise.”
“Doodles are easy little teddy bears.”
“Small dogs don’t need much training.”

But how much of it is actually true? 👀

Each week, we’ll take a lighthearted look at a different breed—or marvellous mystery mix—covering:

🐾 The stereotype
🐾 The reality
🐾 What they were originally bred to do
🐾 What they genuinely need
🐾 The lovable chaos nobody warned you about

Of course, every dog is an individual. This isn’t about labelling dogs or deciding that one breed is “good” or “bad”—it’s about understanding the dog underneath the appearance and helping owners choose companions whose needs suit their lives.

Expect tiny dogs with enormous job descriptions, working dogs disguised as teddy bears, professional escape artists, neighbourhood watch coordinators and some very familiar Marley’s Pals faces. 😂

💍 Becoming his Mum and Dad’s ring bearer.

It was an absolute privilege to help Otis play such a special part in one of the biggest days of his family’s lives.

After all the excitement, it was back to Marley’s Pals for exactly what every hardworking wedding guest deserves—playtime with his favourite ball, plenty of fresh water, lots of cuddles and a well-earned rest while Mum and Dad celebrated into the evening. 🎾💦

From start to finish, our wedding chaperone service is tailored around your plans. Whether it’s transport, grooming, overnight boarding, helping your dog take part in the ceremony, or simply making sure they’re cared for while you celebrate, we’re here to make your day that little bit easier.

🚐✨ VIP transport for a very special guest!

Otis kicked off his stay in typical Golden Retriever fashion by hopping straight into the front passenger seat to supervise collection! 🤣 (Don’t worry, he travelled safely and comfortably in the rear of the van, where all of our guests travel.)

Today he’s enjoying a luxury spa day before relaxing in one of our bespoke kennels, all in preparation for his humans’ wedding tomorrow. 💍

While Mum and Dad are busy with the final wedding preparations, Otis gets his own little holiday—and tomorrow he’ll be looking his very best for his important role in their special day.

Our collection and drop-off service takes the stress out of busy schedules, holidays and wedding mornings. Every journey is in our dedicated Marley’s Pals van, which is fully ventilated to keep our guests comfortable on the road.

Whether it’s for daycare, boarding, grooming or one of our bespoke wedding packages, we can collect your dog from home and return them happy, relaxed and ready for their next adventure.

☀️🐾 Keeping our guests cool, comfortable and safe ❄️

When temperatures rise, your dog’s routine should too.

At Marley’s Pals, we’ve adapted our days to make sure every guest stays as comfortable as possible throughout the warm weather.

❄️ Fully climate-controlled accommodation with air conditioning, heating, fan circulation and dehumidification.
🌅 Longer exercise sessions in the cooler mornings and evenings.
🚶 Regular comfort breaks throughout the day.
💧 Fresh water is always available in raised bowls to help prevent spills, so our guests can stay hydrated whenever they need to.

You might notice in our CCTV photos that many of the dogs have pushed their blankets aside and are happily stretched out on the floor. That’s completely normal! The cool floor is often the most comfortable place to relax in warm weather, and we always let our guests choose where they’re happiest.

For dogs staying with their siblings or housemates, they can still curl up together on the same bed if that’s where they’re most content. 🩵

The hottest part of the day is for relaxing, recharging and staying cool before heading back out for more fun when the temperature drops.
