If you’ve ever been soaked by a dog’s shake after fetching a stick and wondered why they do it this is exactly why-

Scientists have found that a skin receptor, C-LTMR, triggers this “wet dog shake” in dogs, cats, and mice, causing a consistent three-part motion to shed water. Researchers at Harvard’s Howard Hughes Medical Institute identified this receptor using genetic tools in mice. When mechanoreceptor channels were disabled, dampened mice didn’t shake, but stimulating C-LTMRs prompted the shake. Previously linked to ticklish sensations, C-LTMRs also relate to pleasant touch in humans, offering new insights into these shared responses!
