A proper grooming grip should feel relaxed and balanced:
• Only the thumb should move while cutting
• Avoid pushing your thumb too deeply into the ring
• Let your ring finger rest naturally in the finger ring
• Use your index and middle fingers to guide and stabilise the shear
• Keep your pinky on the finger rest for added control and stability

A relaxed, open-handed grip promotes smoother movement, better control, and helps reduce strain on the wrist, thumb, and hand during long grooming sessions.
