The most important period in a dog’s life is when they are between 3-14 weeks of age.
🦮 Therefore, the environment a puppy is born into, what maternal care they receive, and what socialisation and training program the breeder implements, is critical in the development of an adult dog’s behaviour.
🦮 There a clear genetic link to some canine behaviours such as fear and anxiety, separation anxiety, certain aggressions, and their general ability to learning and thrive. The health of the mother, and her behavioural profile has a direct impact on your puppy.
🦮 I would recommend doing your best to rescue a puppy, but I understand, that is not always possible. The dog pictured is my dog, Harvey. He was a rescue puppy, he is 14years old now, and while he needed some training at the start, he is a great dog!
🦮 if you are looking to buy a puppy, it is essential that you see the environment where your puppy was born as this will impact your training and socialisation plan.
🦮 It might not be possible to see the father of your puppy, but all puppies should be seen with their mother and siblings in the environment they were born. This is a non negotiable requirement.
🦮 Like all industries, some breeders are great, some are ok, and some are poor. Your breeder, and their practices has a direct impact on the development of your puppy.
🦮Ideally, puppies should be born and reared in domestic environments like houses. Research shows that puppies born in non domestic environments like barns and sheds, are more likely to develop behaviours like fear and anxiety.
