Loose Leash Walking is the most effective way to stop most dogs from pulling on a lead. It is especially good for puppies, and young dogs. Below is an excellent explanation, and brilliant video on how to achieve loose leash walking for all dogs. https://www.thepetrescueresource.com/loose-leash-walking

Command training for dogs is like doggie meditation. It reduces fear, anxiety, and cortisol levels. It increases serotonin levels, you’re bound and communication with your dog. All dogs, no matter age, or breed, should have at least a 5 minute command training session twice a day. Puppies as young as 8 weeks can start basic command training. Here is an excellent resource to practice sit and stay from The Pet Rescue. The first step to command training success! 🐶⭐️. https://www.thepetrescueresource.com/basic-sit-stay.

The same dog, two very different emotional states!

🐶 A happy, content, relaxed dog, (dog on the right) has the following body language indicators:

🐾Relaxed, opened, mouth

🐾Soft ‘squinty’ eyes

🐾Relaxed, floppy, ears

🐾 Loose, and wiggly body

🐾 A loose, relaxed, neutral wagging tail

🐶An Anxious Dog (dog on the left) has the following body language indicators:

🐾 Closed, tense mouth

🐾Furrowed brow

🐾 ‘Whale eye’, showing the whites of their eyes. Dilated pupils, and avoiding eye contact.

🐾Yawning, licking their lip and nose.

🐾Excessive shedding

🐾 A tucked tail, or a slow, low wag of the tail

A happy dog, is available for learning, and can be taught well. An anxious dog is often NOT available for@learning, and can misinterpret environmental cues, commands and find it difficult to engage with the training process.

This is particularly important, in relation to teaching reactive dogs.

The most important period in a dog’s life is when they are between 3-14 weeks of age.

🦮 Therefore, the environment a puppy is born into, what maternal care they receive, and what socialisation and training program the breeder implements, is critical in the development of an adult dog’s behaviour.

🦮 There a clear genetic link to some canine behaviours such as fear and anxiety, separation anxiety, certain aggressions, and their general ability to learning and thrive. The health of the mother, and her behavioural profile has a direct impact on your puppy.

🦮 I would recommend doing your best to rescue a puppy, but I understand, that is not always possible. The dog pictured is my dog, Harvey. He was a rescue puppy, he is 14years old now, and while he needed some training at the start, he is a great dog!

🦮 if you are looking to buy a puppy, it is essential that you see the environment where your puppy was born as this will impact your training and socialisation plan.

🦮 It might not be possible to see the father of your puppy, but all puppies should be seen with their mother and siblings in the environment they were born. This is a non negotiable requirement.

🦮 Like all industries, some breeders are great, some are ok, and some are poor. Your breeder, and their practices has a direct impact on the development of your puppy.

🦮Ideally, puppies should be born and reared in domestic environments like houses. Research shows that puppies born in non domestic environments like barns and sheds, are more likely to develop behaviours like fear and anxiety.

🦮 please report suspect breeders

Five benefits of attending Puppy School🐶:

🐶 The optimal time for socialisation, and habituation in puppies, is actually between 3-14 weeks. All puppies should attend puppy school once they are fully vaccinated. The younger they are the better!

🐶 Adult dogs learn how to interact with other dogs by engaging, and playing with puppies when they themselves are puppies

🐶 Adult dogs learn not to be afraid, or reactive to people and children, by engaging and meeting people when they are puppies.
The more variety, and the more diverse the range of people they meet the better. However, these meeting are much more beneficial if they take place in a controlled environment like our puppy school.

🐶Adult dogs develop the foundation of their relationships with their owners, and their home environments in puppyhood. Positive reinforcement training in puppyhood is essential for the development of a happy, confident, healthy adult dog. Together, we will learn and practice these skills in Puppy school.

🐶Adult dogs learn not to pull on their leads, not to be reactive on walks, not to jump on strangers during puppyhood. Whilst it is possible to teach an adult dog to stop these behaviours, it is much more efficient and effective to teach them as puppies.

🐶 Puppy school is also a lot of fun, and seeing your puppy flourish, develop, develop more confidence, make new friends, and have the craic is invaluable!

These are the winners of the DogMas 🐶🎅 photo competition. Thanks a million for all the entries, they were all so beautiful and cute, it was too hard to choose, I ended up doing a draw to decide the winners. Happy Christmas to you all and health and happiness for the New Year. I’m finished now in Ravens Terrace, thanks again for everything throughout the years. Thinking of Murphy today who also passed away on Christmas Eve 2018. It’s a strange, but fitting parallel to be closing the first Murphy and Me, on Christmas Eve too. He would have been delighted to have his name above a door, and not a bad legacy for a dog who was unwanted and thrown out of a car! Thanks again, and Nollaig Shona. Mairín

Dear friends, unfortunately, my lease is not going to be renewed, and therefore I am looking for a new home for Murphy and Me. I am ideally looking for an indoor space, with a tiled or concrete floor in order to continue to teach classes, especially puppy school, as it is so important for puppy development. Ideally the space would be open, like the photos. The size of the space shown is approximately 20ft x 14 ft. I am open to all possibilities, and I wouldn’t be against using a property that is an existing business outside of their own opening hours. I think that could be an exciting and different opportunity for other businesses too. I usually teach classes in the evening after six pm and on Sunday mornings, and I am flexible in that regard. The puppies and dogs don’t cause any damage, and I have put a lot of work and effort into my business and would love to continue what I do. If anyone has any interest in having a chat about renting a space to me or if you can share my post that would be greatly appreciated! Grma Mairín
