World Champion and World silver medalist Aoife O’Rourke of Castlrea BC has today been shortlisted for the RTE Sportsperson of the Year award.

Aoife’s outstanding achievements in 2025 are unprecedented and may well be unrepeatable: She won World silver in March at the IBA Women’s World Championships, and 6 months later almost to the day, World gold at the World Boxing Championships.

That she has been shortlisted alongside so many World and European champions in Cycling, Rowing, Swimming, Athletics and together with soccer, GAA and Golf stars shows that Ireland continues to punch above its weight on the international sporting stage.

The winner will be crowned at the RTÉ Sport Awards on Saturday, 20 December on RTE One at 8.05pm

Team Ireland’s Aoife O’Rourke has up-graded her World Championship medal to at least a silver.

She was the 4-0 victor over 2023 Word Champ China’s Chengyu Wang in her semi final.

This was a tumultuous contest, which included a 1st point deduction and a 3rdround standing count for Wang.

Judges scored the bout 28: 28, 27: 29, 26:30, 27:29, 26: 30

She’ll box for gold in Sunday’s Afternoon Session against Turkey’s Busra Isildar - a World and European medalist.

🚨Quarter Finalist

Team Ireland’s Aoife O’Rourke has won through to the World Boxing Championship quarter finals, following a 5-0 last 16 victory.

The 75kg double Olympian was the victor over Monika Langerova of the Czech Republic.

Aoife will contest her quarter final in Wednesday’s Afternoon Session, against the winner of the bout currently underway between Italy’s Melissa Gemini and Norway’s Sunniva Hofstad.
